Scary change to Facebook!

For those of you who have Facebook accounts, beware of the recent change to their Terms of Service (not that you can do anything about it now because the change went into effect on 2/4/09). The change is, even if you delete your account, Facebook now has a perpetual license to use anything you post to your Facebook page. So, what that means is they can use photos of you, your kids, your Airstreams, anything for ever and ever in ads/promotions or whatever they want and there is nothing you can do about it. I think that is very scary.

Read more about it on this consumer blog.

Just wondering out loud...what if you slowly deleted your content over time and THEN delete your account? Or do they cling onto everything that is posted so that deleting it won't really delete it from their servers?

I guess if you don't post any incriminating evidence there really wouldn't be anything to worry about. It's what your friends are posting of you that could possibly be detrimental down the road.
NEU has quite a facebook contingency going . It really is addictive!

Facebook gives me the the creeps! Maybe I'm paranoid, but it just always looks like a great hunting ground for crooks and perverts.

I mean, there are you laying your life out wide open for any fool to come by and destroy!

But maybe it's just me that feels that way...

Facebook is weird indeed. I don't feel comfortable laying my life out in front of everyone. I signed up briefly and deleted my account after a couple of weeks. It sucks up a lot of your time and I would rather be doing other things.....just my opinion

The content left on any public service that is free should have no expectation of privacy whatsoever.

Running a Public School System's IT, I can tell you first hand that nearly any FOIA request for any user can be filled because frankly few things users delete are actually deleted, we have archives of the data for years after it was created or deleted.

You want privacy, don't use work systems for personal stuff. Don't give your email address out to places you don't know, and don't enter any personal info into any public places....and/or stay off the web in general.

Well I don't know about you guys but I think it's been a great tool for me to find and get in touch with friends I haven't spoken with in some 20 years. I worked at a camp with a lot of Brits that I am just now finding them through Facebook. It's all how you use it and how much info you want to shell out. Of course you have to be aware of the dangers of what lurks out there.

I got on Facebook about 2 months ago. I was talked into it by a friend. It has been a wonderful tool to find old acquaintances and friends and renew some of those friendships. I don't put information on there that people could use to harm me or my family. After looking at the info. on there about me I don't think any predator will come to my house looking for anything.

I question if you post a copyrighted item do they have automatic permission to use it as they see fit and even if it isn't copyrighted do they have the right to use it for their gain. I/E If i write a poem and put it on face book can they publish it elsewhere without my permission?

Seem like one might not have to join any groups to protest Facebook's new policy:

The complaints helped

This was posted on Facebook this morning...

Terms of Use Update

Over the past few days, we have received a lot of feedback about the new terms we posted two weeks ago. Because of this response, we have decided to return to our previous Terms of Use while we resolve the issues that people have raised. For more information, visit the Facebook Blog.

If you want to share your thoughts on what should be in the new terms, check out our group Facebook Bill of Rights and Responsibilities.

I have nothing to hide. I'm self employed, I have dogs and other means of protection for the pervs and crooks and good neighbors watching out as well.

I'm glad I unfacebooked awhile ago. I never did get it. Maybe it's my age or resistance to change but why did I need to belong to something just to communicate with friends? And then I had all these invite and requests to be friends from people I never heard of and felt bad rejecting them. Life is simpler without Facebook.
