I have played around with trying to find an internet provider via a satelite dish system. I am told that its available for home use but not for RV. Has anyone found a good system for accessing the internet from your RV while on the road. Yes I have a wireless card and I go to sites where I can get on line in the club house or pay $6 bucks a day for wireless in a very few campgrounds, but I would love to have a stand alone system where I do not have to depend on the campgrounds or nearby businesses.

Barkingspider is correct. I love my new system, nothing like driving down the road and playing on the internet!! Just kidding, but when I pull into a rest area or refueling I can check my e-mail or check the froum.

Don,
If you don't mind my asking

What is the monthly "upkeep" on the system? We are going to be in the market eventually...I curently use a 3G cell phone with a patch cable and it is holding its own...only problem I have found with the sattelite is if you use a VPN (I do for work) it is as slow or slower than a conventional dialup, so no advantage there for me.

This is the ultmite system here. Cost about $35000ish + 500 month!
Connects to the same bird as direcway just more bandwith.

Do you know the download rate? What is the monthly service cost? Is it an open connection like a cable modem, dsl, or are you required to reconnect with every stop? What is the reconnection time?

We currently use the same system as Gunnyusmc in our Argosy. Downloads are 100-200 kbps typically (on Sprint), but don't compare that to satellite. Satellite will claim much higher download speed but they don't tell you about the latency (delay) between the satellite and Earth.

With secure web pages and email, which both require a lot of back-and-forth between computers, the Internet-in-Motion system is effectively faster. In my experience, only on a straight file download will satellite beat cellular (I've had both systems).

Monthly service cost is about $80 for unlimited use on either Sprint or Verizon.

There is no "re-connection" required when you move. It does make a "call" for each Internet session, but since calls set up in less than a second, you don't really notice it. The thing works anytime you are in range of a cell tower, even WHILE DRIVING. Hence "Internet in Motion"

The other nice thing is that it is paired with a 12v Netgear wireless router so that the Internet is available anywhere in or around the trailer. This is great if you use a laptop. Right now I'm sitting on the bed doing this. Later today I'll be at the picnic table outside. And we check weather radar and look for campgrounds from the passenger seat of the tow vehicle (!) while we are the highway. It's VERY handy.

Thanks for the info...I have been doing basically the same thing with the Sprint PCS cellphone with a patch cable, my downloads are typically in the 130-170k range. I like the concept of the wireless router. We are seriously considering the upgrade to fulltiming in the next few months...I already spend about 280 days a year on the road

...so I don't know why it took us so long to come to the obvious conclusion

We are starting our search for "The Rig" to full time in.

That's interesting. Basically the Junxion box appears to be a wireless router with a PCMCIA slot for the cellular card.

One thing that I should point out is that for a full-timer or anyone who really *needs* to get online, you'll want an external antenna, and a good one at that. You'll also want a higher-output cellular modem than the standard PCMCIA card. Otherwise you'll have a lot of frustration in marginal signal areas.

So to my mind, the Junxion box provides sort of an interim wi-fi solution for the card you might already own, but I wouldn't expect it to deliver the same performance as Internet in Motion with an external antenna.
