As a native Texan I don't think I could argue with him. Sweating while sleeping on the ground isn't fun anymore. I'm sure I liked it when I was a kid or I would've quit Scouts, but I'm way over it now!

Hah....I've had my fun in tents with no AC in the Army. Those days are done. Comfort is KEY. Let's see you pull that one off there bubba with a misses and 6 year old to boot.

Looks like I've got three or four great options, none far at all from the city. Guess I'll have to do one-potato, two-potato.

I'm looking forward to "going to see America" for three weeks or so. Wish I could get as far west as AZ and CAL.

Being in San Antonio I would highly recommend the KOA east of downtown. We checked out this facility for a possible site for our Fiesta Rally in 2012. The only reason we did not select it was the small size of the rally room that would not handle 100 people. It is a great location and is completely fensed and hidden by large foleage. Great pool and hot tub. As posted earlier it is about 15 minutes from downtown.

Another thing I just thought of, it is on the bus line which makes it even better.

Paula, I've been on the road about 170 contiguous days now and Traveler's World was one of the nicest, best run parks of the many that I stayed at in that time. About a ten minute straight shot to the center of the city, with no freeway travel needed.

There were tornados and 1 inch hail in eastern Virginia tonight - from the local channel that reports weather the most, I HOPE it missed my Airstream which is in a very rural campground with BIG pine trees right next to it. I knew it was coming, and left to come to work. I'm now on the way home to see if the Airstream survived.

I see there's a good used 27 FB Safari for sale at Colonial - don't like the green check fabric, but... I might need a third trayla... Wish me the best. IF my wifi is working, I'll try to let you know whether I'm truly homeless or OK.

Have a bad feeling, never had one like this before.

Everything was OK except for masses of pine straw and leaves blown around. Pine Pollun - thought it would have been washed off, but instead was caked on. It sure could have been a lot worse. Whew. Dodged a bullet.

I looked around, and the location of this makes it best for the hotel - the Grand Hyatt. The cost is about the same as the KOA but the reviews are better - and it isn't a massive KOA.

Thank you all for the information - there certainly were a lot of good choices.

NOW for the TRIP.

I plan to leave June 1 or 2 and arrive in San Antonio On Monday, June 13, leaving Saturday the 18th. I'll have to scoot home to VA Beach rather fast, but I have two weeks for the trip out. The last thing I want to do is ride the interstates mile after mile after mile. 300 miles per day and SEE the country is my goal.

Good ideas for strange and wonderful stuff along the way? I'm a history buff, and prefer the quaint, wierd and rural. Definitely MUST put a few miles on Route 66 though.

So suggestions are welcome.

Well, RT 66 is pretty far north from you in San Antonio, so head to Amarillo (perhaps stopping in Palo Duro Canyon on the way). Eat at the Big Texan - not the "free" 72oz steak challenge, but because of the kitsch and the service and steaks are pretty good. Just west of Amarillo is carhenge.

Which way from there?

If you choose not to go up to RT 66, and you are heading homeward, consider Baton Rouge and Lafayette, LA. That is Cajun country. Day trip down to Avery Island for the Tabasco plant tour.

Well I took a closer look at Route 66 and realistically - not anywhere close to San Antonio.

So generally I'm going through the states listed above. I'm not planning to do major interstates except though mountains - and even then if there's a good four or two lane, I'll take it. I have allowed 10 days for my travels, so please suggest places to stop and things to see along the route.

Quaint towns, birthplaces of Presidents, possibly the Lodge cast iron foundary, neat pawn shops, etc. get my interest. I really enjoyed seeing county fairs, the work of the mad potter of Biloxi, the Chingoteague pony swim.

If I never visit another outlet mall or puke-arama amusement park it will be fine with me. Casinos... I own a business, that's enough gambling for me? I do know about Roadsideamerica.com so I'll reference that too.

I'm just back in Toronto after 173 days on the road through that territory. If you can see Asheville, North Carolina - Chattanooga, Tennessee- Austin, Texas along your route, you will have seen three of the coolest, most forward thinking cities in your land. Music, artists, lots to see and do, cutting edge urban planning, interesting new and old architecture. Good nearby RV parks.

And one of the nicest stretches of road joining those cities is Natchez Trace Parkway! 444 miles of wooded, non-routed road with a 55 speed limit, no stop signs or any form of civilization!

Amarillo is too darn far to drive if you are going to San Antonio. If you come across from Louisiana at Shreveport, catch US 80 until it gets to DFW area, then a little bit of I-20 to get you west of Fort Worth where you can catch 281 south toward San Antonio and drive through the Hill Country on your way, hitting LBJ country, Wildflower farm outside Fredericksburg, Kerrville (home to the famous folk festival) and then on into San Antonio.

You can jog back to the east when you hit Fredericksburg and see the sites of Austin.
