OH NO! Pink Flamingo Plant Closing

The original manufacturer of plastic pink flamingos is closing it's door on November 1st. Members of the New England Unit held a moment of silence in honor of our club bird at today's fall business meeting. RIP.....

Michelle/Leon,

Thanks. What a dreary thought to ruin an otherwise perfectly good afternoon.

Flamingos

Guess we all need to check out www.flamingomania.com and clean off the shelves. FYI, if they don't have a flamingo themed item...you probably don't really need it.

Fred and Ethel (our Flamingo mascots) will be very upset to hear this news. We will now not be able to leave them out at night as they may become the target of Flamingo nappers.

So sorry to hear the news.
I never met a flamingo I didn't like.

With so many of our planets’ species becoming extinct, this is a sad situation indeed. Could it have been caused by WalMart or perhaps the result of global warming?
Well, at least their still making aluminum Airstream trailers.

No plastic flamingo yet, but better hurry huh?

Easing into the flamingo theme here and finding it easy to adapt. Usually things are stolen in the night but we had two plaster pink flamingoes placed in front of our AS in the night. Seems a neighbor thinks an AS must have PF's to look complete. Guess those plastic PF's will now be collector vintage items only found on eBay?? Before our nightime delivery, the only PF item bought was a doormat:

What is this world coming to? Might we have to revert to other forms of tackiness?

PINK FLAMINGO's

QUOTE FROM AP STORY:

"The birds typically sell at around $10 for boxed sets of two — one standing nearly 3 feet high with its head held proudly erect, the other bending over as if munching on grass. Their legs consist of spindly metal rods that can be planted in the ground. The Featherstone originals have their creator's signature etched into the bird's plastic rear end."

"Other companies' knockoff versions of the Featherstone original remain in production. But the uncertainty surrounding the original has aficionados of kitsch snapping up what they can via the online auction site eBay and elsewhere in case Featherstone versions go out of stock for good."

Good luck finding originals. Overseas producers will copy the signature too.....

If you hurry and corner the market, you can make a small fortune:

Pink

A warning from someone who knows, to all my Airstream friends! Beware of sub-species Pink Flamingos. Having just finished my research for an up coming ALM article, there are many knock-off China variety Flamingos out on the market. In fact I am very embarresed to say that the Pink Flamingos offered by Airstream out of the store in JC and the web-site are not the original. When purchasing your Pink Flamingos there are two things to look for; one is that they have beaded eyes that move and secong, the Don Feathermore's signature is in the mold under the tail feathers. Have a little faith though because Dennis Plante is hoping to sell the original molds to another company. Before jumping onto Ebay, there are still several web-stores selling current inventory at fair prices.

I am crushed. We bought ours at the JC Factory Store and now to find out they aren't originals. What is the world coming to when one American Icon doesn't support another American Icon! No wonder they went out of business. It's the story of American manufacturing. China's economy is emerging at the cost of the American worker. How much longer 'till we start buying Airstreams built in China...hey, the quality might actually go up!

Almost extinct

I started thinking and realized I probably should order some back-up flamingos in case Lucy and Ricky decide to migrate. I just talked to this company, MasterGardening, a real person on the phone. He said these are the real Don Featherstone (http://www.mastergardening.com/gif-9001.html) and they are going REALLY REALLY FAST. And the price is the same as I paid months ago. For $12.95 a pair you too might be able to get the last of them.

Now up to $45.95/pair. Nothing like supply side economics at work!
