Rivets in Summer Video

I thought I would post the link to my light show in its own thread for the forums. I would like to thank the members of NEU and the forum for their kind words.

The show was developed in the spirit of the New England Unit, after being inspired by the great Aluminations rally of 2006, and a few adult beverages.

That was great!... I think the NEU and the WDCU need to do a joint rally and show that the WBCCI is still about having fun.

It was a response to a challenge by the sweet young lady, MyBoyBurt, (I call her the Borg Queen) who recruited (assimilated?) us into the New England unit.

I am an electrical engineer by trade, but I started college as a music major. That, plus shamelessly lifting the idea and the choreography of the engineer in Cincinnati who originally did this to his house, made it possible to design the show.

Thumbs up Again - THIS IS A MUST SEE

This Airstream light show is in my forever memory list. I will never forget it. The video is great but the live show was simply out of this world!

Just Fabulous!!!

I just stumbled across this video via a search for something else and it just intrigued me with the name of course Rivets in Summer...

That made my DAY - it was absolutely the most creative thing I have seen in a very very very long time. Perfectly sinchronized to the light show - just FAB - I will keep that in the fun things to look at file...

That makes my string of flamingo party light look pitiful. You are so talented. I loved the light show, what does your house look like at Christmas? Great job!

I'm curious- is that a real-time light show or are most of the effects done in editing the video?

Either way, it's a hoot!

Thanks eveyone for the nice comments.

This was a real time light show done for a New England Unit rally.

Some technical details:

I designed an electronic sequencer that addresses six 8 bit EPROMS to allow the control of 48 optically isolated AC channels. It is a simple 11 bit up counter that addresses the EPROMS clocked with a 19.85 Hz oscillator. The sequencer actually runs asynchronously with the music, I just detect the first note of the music to start the sequence, and it runs independently from there. I was lucky that the music, "Wizards in Winter" maintains a single steady tempo. I was sweating that out for a while.

The tough part was coming up with timing diagrams for the light choreography. Luckily, TSO has the sheet music for this piece on their website. I wrote the timing diagrams like a musical score on staff paper which made it easier to compare to the sheet music and synchronize. The timing "score" was then translated to EPROM data.

Most of the parts are just surplus, old technology through hole TTL. I wire wrapped the circuit board, and patched together a variety of surplus cables.

It was just a fun project, a better way to spend evenings than watching sitcom re-runs.

My parents started me on trombone lessons in third grade, they wanted me to be the next Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey. But in my second year of a music education major major, I started student teaching in a broken down grade school in Oklahoma, and I decided I better find a different vocation.

I also needed to pass a piano proficency test, but I was a hopeless case.

Hi Bob and Carla,

Thanks for the karma, I need all I can get.

I used to drive through Pelham often on my way back from U Lowell night school.

NEU has scheduled "Aluminations Revisited" rally for the middle of September 08 at the Rochester Fairgrounds. I will certainly bring the show there! The first Aluminations was great, and inspired me to do this project.
