My grandfather always said retirement is rough, since you never get a day off any more.

Science fiction author Robert Heinlein once said, "The true measure of success is being given the opportunity to work long, hard hours at something you really enjoy."

Now that I'm retired, I plan to work long, hard hours at staying retired.

Yep, if you don't find some enjoyment in what you are doing, you are doing the wrong things.

RAH knew what he was talking about.

He also said, "specialization is for ants, people have to be versatile..."

I routinely read the obituaries because I find other peoples' lives interesting.

Today's paper had six pages of obits. I once asked a funeral director if there was a time of year or season with a higher mortality rate. He said January and February were his businest months. Some of it had to do with the cold and flu season, but many "hold on" until after the holidays before letting go. One of the obits made mention of just that; their beloved grandfather was able to attend the family Christmas dinner, and toasted his family with much love and gratitude. He was a WW2 vet and was seriously injured during the Italian campaign. He never took a single day of his life for granted. He wanted his grandchildren to remember that especially.

Many obituaries also mention how the passed "spent many enjoyable years RV'g."

But then, we already knew that.

Retirement? Funny, I am busier than ever because family and friends are positive I have nothing but free time so ask endlessly for favors. The Airstream is a wonderful way to say, "Sorry, I'll be out on another trip then!"

Are there any good anwers, or are answers merely a mechanism that avoids the really good questions?

I was stationed in southern Italy in the mid eighties, and the grandfather of one of our Italian friends fought for Mussolini in WW2 and was captured by the British. He was so happy after he was captured. Said that he had it better as a POW than he did as a soldier in the Italian army. He couldn't believe the Brits actually gave him socks. He didn't have those working for the other team...

-Red, loving my socks on these cold mornings...

Story time....Place Lake Park Campground, Lake Lewisville, Texas. About 2010.

I was walking around and noted a fellow about 80 years old was setting up a brand new, 30 foot moho. So, asking if i could be of any assistance, and commenting on his new RV, we began a conversation.

As the story unfolds, he and his wife had been RV'ers for many years and at age 80 they decided to enter a retirement village, and give up the RV lifestyle. Six months later, they were looking at each other and said...."What are we doing here?"

The answer was obvious...waiting to die and not enjoying the process at all. So, they went out and purchased a new moho and decided to go full time, in the lifestyle they enjoyed, for as long as they possibly could, in the moho.

My kinda folks!

Random thoughts from my confused mind.

Most people do not get out of life, alive.

People work most of their life in order to retire from work.

Many people retire, then get a job because they either need more money or need something to work at.

Most of my retired friends have jobs.

None of my old retired friends have Airstreams.

Conclusion: I need to get some new friends.

Every morning I read the obituaries. If I'm not listed I turn on the coffee pot.

Msmoto, great story and message. You can retire, get sick, and die. Or you can retire, buy an RV, get well, and live.

On one RV forray, the rig across from the FaN belonged to full-timers. They had been doing it for eleven years. They were in their late seventies, but looked fifteen years younger.
