Figure this, a typical check at a restaurant these days is about $60, minimum, for a party of four, and I think that's a little on the light side. But anyway, figure $9 tip (15%), and a waitress will wait at least four tables at a time, so that's become $36, and how long does it typically take to eat? I think one hour is average. So that becomes $36 an hour. Just my thoughts, and YMMV.
Sorry, I can't let this go, I've know too many waiters. It's way off topic but I'm with Paula on this one. That $36 that you come up with is not just for the waiter you are face to face with, it's also the person who showed you to your seat, took your orders, made your food and drinks, brought your food and drinks, bussed your table, washed your dishes and did the set up for the next customer. All those people share the tips but you see very few of them and tip only the one that took your orders and brought you the bill.

This can vary by locale and custom but I have never known a server who gets to keep it all. I've know a lot of servers, none of them are living in mansions. Most are just struggling to pay their tuition, books, fees and buy gas to go home for the holidays. I've raised two of them.

That being said, I like the Beach Boys A LOT!

(On the phone) I'd like to order a pizza, with no anchovies?

(This end) No anchovies? You've got the wrong number. I spell my name Danger.

Random thoughts

It seems like it is politically correct for women to bash men but not verse visa

I wish my husband enjoyed walking around as much as I do!! It doesn't matter where I am, I enjoy the walk, but it is much more enjoyable walking with someone! Just my random thought!!

Because when I come here, I find peoples own thoughts, feelings, or experiences…… not a bunch of regurgitated memes, and quotes ( random Facebook bashing )

Hey Laura ( remaxgal )

Men are goal orientated…..ask Tom to walk somewhere in particular, instead of just walking around. Then tell him it is to save gas. Sorry….that wasn't random ………...at all.

The food industry lobbies got a special deal in the United States and pays servers just over $2 per hour in most states. Thus the restaurant owners are keeping the difference between that number and the minimum wage in their own pockets as pure profit at the expense of their employees. The servers have to hustle at a diner to clear even net the minimum wage hurdle after forced sharing of the "tips" with the entire staff. Their hours are rigged to preclude eligibility for any benefits like healthcare or profit sharing.

In my and my wife's experience traveling in Europe and Japan, the servers earn a living wage and in some countries tipping is not expected. We in the US have been hoodwinked into tipping to compensate for the wage theft.

If this is in fact how the whole system works, it's really screwed up. However, I don't think it's like this everywhere because I have a couple of nieces that waited tables, and they told a different story.
