Living in an oak woods, I am under attack every day. Fortunately the little tree rats are not nocturnal, so the fighting stops at sundown. The Air Force (the local hawks, eagles, and owls) raid 24/7. The Army (me) engages the enemy daily with artillery and snipers. We can never let down our guard, as the war will never end until we eradicate every last one of them.

Yeah they're cute running around in the city park, but wait til you've faced an attack of thousands of them. Standin knee deep in brass from the .22 cal. mini guns, and the .410 M2s. then you know what nurderous little devils they really are.

I agree! At least those who live in the wild. Will let you know how they do on the local urban vegetation and my workshop pine.

Channing,
Depending onwhere you live, a really good air rifle, is quiet, and as a bonus, there's not much better meat than fried squirrel. Use the drippings to make gravey, bake some bisquits, and enjoy!

The key is GOOD air rifle. the cheap kids toys at 450 fps will only p them off. the high power ones @ 1200 fps will do the job. Amazing thick skin on those critters.

Well, it can be quite tasty if you are really hungry, and have nothing else to eat. After all, they are just bushy tailed tree rats.

You have to cook them for 3 days to get them tender. Of course that's after you separate them from their hides. Toughest skining animal I have ever put a blade to.

If you must eat rodents, rabbits are so much better.

My Grandmother used to parboil them and then flour and fry.

For better or worse, shooting the tree rats someplaces in Fl will get you fined. I believe BB guns are considered weapons. Isn't tnis a great country? Peace,Jim.

Squirrels are an economic indicator. You can tell our country has been in an extended period of prosperity. Let times get hard enough, for long enough, and the tree rats won't be able to show their bushy tailed butts in daylight... They're free food, just walking around in trees.

-Red, has the same theory about cats...

I have eaten squirrel, when I was much younger, and much less afluent, but I have never been hungry enough to eat a cat.

Welllllllll... This is what I did.

Went in attic and fired bbs into all the potential nests... Not a peep... I walked around the outside and set an ambush. My kind (peace be upon him) neighbor say with his 911 speed dial on the ready... How helpful.

I informed him I would pay for any damages the squirrel departure may cause... His eyes got wiiiiiide!

Then I came in to my last resort. My dog.

I lifted him into the attic... 2 squirrels in 2 minutes... Bagged and tagged. Dang fine dog! Hardly messed up the meat!

I hated putting him in the fiberglass but he had a ball!

Had a neighbor in Alabama that totally ignored advice go cut his trees back far enough that squirrels could not get to his roof. Of course they moved right in.

A few years later, he sold and moved on. The new owner told me the FO had used rat poison in the attic to kill off the rodents just before he put the house on the market, and the stench of the remains in the attic was incredible. The new owner cut the trees WAY back after he cleaned out the mess. Tougher guy than I am....

We cut our trees back before we built the house....

Red - just catching up and saw this... but you mean I could leave the Bo at home and bring the AS? Only problem is it takes long enough to get from here to there without driving and towing, too!

Have to admit, last time I was at S&F was in the early 80s when it was still pretty sleepy!
