Slept in late this morning. Sitting here enjoying the first cup of coffee of the day, scrolling through Air Forums... I'm a federal employee, and we get Dr Martin Luther Kings birthday off. Has me thinking, what the heck went wrong? I appreciate the goal the man was working towards. It's a great idea, people of different color skin and different backgrounds living together in harmony, judging each other on the content of their character rather than race, gender, religion, sexual orientation?.. Somehow though, we're going further and further in the other direction. I feel there is more divide today than there was in the eighties. I'd love to blame it on the radical groups that foster the hatred and discontent, but they're so small now as to be inconsequential. KKK? You'd be hard pressed to find them today. Black Panthers? They've started a come back, but I believe they're more of a result of the widening divide than a cause.

Want to know what I believe? I believe we have mainstream politicians and social leaders on both sides of this gap that profit greatly by stirring this pot, by keeping the cauldron boiling. Yes, I know, it's a complicated issue, and why would someone want the unrest we have today? As long as we're divided into little groups of minorities that hate each other, those people that stir it have power, and once you have power, nobody wants to lose it.

I watched a TED talks yesterday by a lesbian contributor to Fox News named Sally Kohn. If you've never watched a TED talks, Google it. Good stuff. Anyways, as you may have guessed, Sally is pretty far left of center, and her friends wanted to know how she could stand working at Fox News. Her answer blew me away. She said that as much as she disagrees with Shawn Hannity's conservative views, that he was an incredibly nice guy! Imagine that, we can completely disagree with someone, and yet still be friends! This is the point that those in power who want to stay in power want you to miss. They (the people on the other side of whatever argument you're in) are PEOPLE, and probably pretty darned nice people too.

There was a guy a long time ago that a group of religious leaders of the day were trying to trap in an argument, to get him to say something against God so they could incite a crowd against him, railroad him in a trial. So they asked him what was the greatest commandment... "First, love God above all else, with everything you have, but secondly, and equal to it, love everybody as you love yourself!" Yeah, they ended up killing him... Love everybody like you love yourself. What a great idea. I don't have to agree with them, but that doesn't make them evil people. Maybe, before we start the argument, before we introduce ourselves by what we disagree on, maybe we get to know the person, become friends, get involved in their lives... I bet they'll be a lot more open to listen to what we have to say at that point. And, even if they still disagree, I've still made a great friend, and who doesn't need more great friends?

-Red, enjoying his day off...

In my experience it's the DW's obligation to define the onset of Old Fartness.

Which member of the Odd Couple would one be? Tends to answer itself if one has to make a conscious effort around speechifying, dress and sociability. We'll assume hygiene is acceptable.

Or, "yeah, he's a character", said not quite out of earshot.

Both tend not to have a DW. And charter OF membership.

OK, OK, my DW says I'm not an OF yet. Whew!

Yeah, you could say I'm in denial.

If you've got her convinced, you just might not be an OF.

-Red, supporting your denial...

It's probably going to cost me, big time, but I'll go with it.

Paddledipper is right on!
Absolutely no insult intended!
In my day (and I'm not THAT old), The OF term applied to anyone over 30.
And no-one believed they would live past 40.
I think OF'tedness should be appreciated and celebrated. Whatever age it crops up at.
And that is why I say 'thank you' to you all for your humour, erudition and wisdom.
I hope you all had a great Martin Luther King BDay, and a shout out to those that volunteered for the day.
And thank you Red for your musings, we should all get to know each other better before being tribal and exclusionary.
Sigh.....in a perfect world....

Maybe the others are here to collect their welfare checks.

Perhaps instead of welfare checks, it is mental welfare that gets tweaked and a smile comes to one's face for the wit and dry humor, or the lack thereof...

Mental welfare definitely! I have caught a whiff of that lack of humor you're speaking of... not too often, but there is a tendency in some to be prone to butthurtedness. I own The LoveStream, life's too good to whine...

-Red, trying to keep his humor wet...
