And as if rain weren't bad enough...

Today we're getting the weirdest, nastiest type of thunderstorm here in Massachusetts. About an hour ago there was hail about the size of a quarter, rain downpouring on and off, wind, thunder and lightning, and bright sunshine, either all mixed together or in any combination. Right now I'm getting distant thunder, sudden downpour, and bright sunshine all at the same time. Downright eery.

When there was a break in the action I went out to check our new Bambi for hail damage and didn't see anything. Hopefully the tree canopy is protecting it a bit from the hard-hitting stuff. I hear there's a tornado warning in Essex County. What else can enter this mix?

Any other New Englanders out there feel like they're living through Twilight Zone weather today?

YES! It was pretty scary here in New Boston, NH this morning at about 8:30am - wind so strong I could hear the barn's metal roof rattling! And even more scary for you folks with a brand new Bambi sitting outside with hail coming down - YIKES.

We built our barn to hold two Airstreams, ours and my parents. I'm such a baby about "The Tube", so concerned about hail and trees falling on her that she is never outside of the barn unless we are traveling with her. She is hail safe when she is at home.

A barn would be great!! We're planning on at least a shelter for the Bambi in the future, but that's a ways off yet. Doug was wondering if it would help to throw a temporary tarp over her when there was a hail warning out. Anybody know?

I would think the tarp would need to be at least 6 or so inches above the Airstream - in the hopes that the hail wouldn't impact the trailer. Maybe one of the cloth storage garages would work. I think they are big $$$ though

There was a tornado warning in Essex County; The wife called me from the basement! TV said "take cover NOW!"...
It was a bona fide warning...not a "watch". a confirmed Tornado in the next town, heading in our direction.
luckily, it passed us by without any incident.

But Andre (Balgrn), who lives a few miles to the north, just sent an e-mail with pics of serious hail damage to his truck. Airstreams and people are all ok, though.

you folks in the mid-west are surely chuckling about this...but we're not used to it!!

Hey, Chuck, did you know that the first recorded tornado in U.S. history was in Essex Co., Massachusetts, July 5, 1643? That's just a little bit of trivia I picked up trying to get more info on the weather today. You're in a regular N.E. tornado alley.

Seriously, though, I'm glad to hear you and the family are all okay. Having grown up in tornado-land, I know that a tornado warning is something everyone takes seriously, and nobody ever gets used to. I'm glad we don't get them very often.

No, I did not know that. But I'm not surprised...lots of "firsts" here, as the history goes back about as far as you can go, being one of the earliest settlements and all.

Oh the pain.... I am only glad my Safari is under a hard storage roof. Out local weather showed the golf ball sized hail in New Hampshire tonight. Talk about defoliation! This was something to see!! Neither my Firefox nor IE seem configured to show the video well, but if you can see it, here it is: http://www.wmur.com/video/9500788/index.html

Every Piece of metal on it has been dented 3/8" deep every inch or 2. Winshield was destroyed. I left it at the dealer las night.

There are a couple of Tropical systems trying to form down here. If you really want them, I will see what I can do to send them your way--but why would you want them???

Oh, man, don't even go there. With the weird spring and summer weather up here, I'm getting pretty nervous about August-September. Anybody in New England with some extra barn room to protect my Bambi through hurricane season?

Was your truck at home when the storm hit? I forwarded your pics to your neighbor (my boss) and everything was fine at his house (the one next to yours). I read in Foster's that Foss motors will be shut down for several weeks as their entire inventory is totaled. Does anyone remember the international at Bismark when the hail storm hit? You still see Bismarks (the aptly named Airstreams that survived the rally) on the road. Want to buy a Dodge $?
