I'm new to this site as well as being new to R. Ving. We purchased our first R.V. an Airstream motor home in May & have been learning the ropes close to home, in Michigan. This is my first time posting on this site...So, if this isn't allowed, tell me gently...I have a Singer Featherweight to sell. It's in perfect condition...Comlpete with the case & a few tools. I just had it at our local sewing machine shop for a tune up. The woman there said they go for $700. I only want $350. (what I have into it) If anyone is interested in one,my email is: dowpells@charter.net
By the way, 62bam that is the sweetest Airstream. I would love to be talented enough to restore an old one.

Well, it looks like I'll be quilting in my airstream. We'll be full-timing for a while in Ohio. Hubby just accepted a job offer today. I'll be taking my big machine with me. The hard part is deciding what projects to pack right now... LOL.

We relocate next week...

Okay, Lois...you're becoming our on-the-road tester of quilting in an Airstream. What works, what doesn't, what to take, what you learn to leave behind, what you wish you'd brought instead, how and where to store, where to work..inside? outside? what to do with work in progress while trailering...so much to share with those of us left at home. Please keep us posted because we'll sure be interested ~G

Well, my car trunk has my sewing stuff in it with the exception of my special ironing board, Rosie (my baby travel Janome), and an art bin of notions.

I'm used to sewing in my airstream because that's where I started mainly... it kept me company when we were a one vehicle family and hubby worked... about the only issue I envision so far will be seating myself at the correct height to free-motion quilt (FMQ) at the dinette. Might have to make me a booster seat! LOL

I found a Modern Quilt Guild in the big city I'll be near and I'll meet new folks there...I can't wait!

We roll tomorrow with our home TO our new home!

It's interesting how serendipity happens. Yesterday I went with quilting friends to our first class on applique techniques for a Baltimore Album quilt. We were visiting around the sewing table when I mentioned I was looking for a small very light machine such as a Singer Featherlite from the '60's or a Janome. Our teacher looked up in surprise and said that she had such a Featherlite that she would sell to me for about $300, a second Featherlite that she had purchased for a daughter who never will use it. She says it's in great usable condition and will bring it to our class in two weeks so I can see and try it out. I'm getting excited. We'll be taking a long weekend with our Airsteam over the Halloween weekend to Bennet Springs State Park, will be surrounded by beautiful fall color and the trout stream, and I should have great inspiration to set up my new Featherlite on the picnic table and piece away! Now I have to figure out the stashing of necessaries for quilting in my Airstream ~G

Yup - there are guys who quilt

I've been on the Airforums for nearly 5 years and I can't believe that this is the first time I've posted to this thread.

I've been quilting on and off for about 15 years now. I have a collection of machines and a stash that will last me for the next 2 or 3 lifetimes. I keep a Featherweight in the trailer enjoy piecing when we're out in the Airstream.

Lately I've been working on Judy Neimeyer patterns. I took workshop with her at Asilomar last spring and I'll be doing another with her in April of next year. Here's one I've done...

JimandRod, that's a gorgeous quilt. Paper piecing? I've done a little, very mind wrinkling, and I'm taking a class later this month to learn some particular skills for it. I love the woven effect of your pattern. Here's another Featherweight owner. I must be on the right track. ~G

Jim & Rod - beautiful quilt - love the texture & colors!
There are other guys that quilt - David McCallum, the author of the Featherweight & I, is an artist turned quilter. His book on Featherweight maintenance is a must have for anyone who owns one of these beauties.

Thanks Georgia. The pattern is Stepping Stones by Judy Neimeyer. It's all done from Bali Pops. I took a paper piecing class a few years ago to try it. I was only mildly impressed. I really didn't like to the amount of fabric it wasted. But I still found the technique interesting.

Earlier this year we went to the Empty Spools Seminar in Monterey CA (actually it's in Pacific Grove) I took Judy's class because I thought her patterns were interesting and her technique is very fast and efficient. We're going back again in April and I'll take her class again so I can work on some more advanced patterns of hers. Empty Spools Seminars 2011

I'm currently working with 2 of her other patterns, the Bali Wedding Star and Desert Sky Quiltworx.com - Bali Wedding Star - Foundation Paper Piecing, Quilt Patterns, Quilt Retreats, Quilt Videos, Color Changing Quilts, and Quilt Creator and Quiltworx.com - Desert Sky - Foundation Paper Piecing, Quilt Patterns, Quilt Retreats, Quilt Videos, Color Changing Quilts, and Quilt Creator

Judy is an incredible teacher. She has a great sense of humor and she's a real pleasure to be around.

When we went to Empty Spools earlier this year I did the class and Rod just hung out and enjoyed himself along the California coast.. Since then he developed an interest in applique work and he's going to be taking Susan Carlson's class. She does some amazing applique work. susancarlson.com

Maybe a quilting rally might be fun.

Jim

Thanks Lois!

As I mentioned in my response to Georgia, it's a Judy Neimeyer pattern done from Bali Pops.

Keep on Quilting!
Whitelight - Yes, I've met David McCallum once before. I have a few featherweight books already. I've been purchasing and cleaning them up to resell for a few years now. I only have four right now. Two I plan to keep and two that I'll be selling in the next few weeks. After those are gone I probably won't be buying any more.

My favorite is one from Canada that was manufactured in Scotland. It has a scroll faceplate and it is the smoothest and quietest FW I've ever seen.

They're great little machines - perfect for an Airstream!

It's unfinished, I am guessing it's less than 1/4 the way done but in order to keep the momentum of posting going on this thread (which is my favorite thread). I thought I'd share some of my ongoing projects. This is literally a scrap quilt top. It has no definite finish time and it's paper pieced.

Anyone else got pictures of ongoing projects?

This is a baby boy quilt in progress. The ninepatch blocks are part of the top/bottom design. Been working on it out on the picnic table. Hopefully will be able to get to it today. Lots to do. Rosie's getting a workout.
