Kay, this seems to have grown beyond what you expected. Will you have help for setting and readying the quilt tops? How many blocks are in a quilt per your instructions? Your invitation to make Valor blocks certainly touched an untapped chord among my friends. They are still talking about the project ~G

I'll have "advice" this weekend, I'm sure, and maybe help. I'm not concerned about getting them done. I can do the quilts several ways: all star blocks I've collected, blocks in between star blocks, blocks set on point, etc. I have limited sizes to use and have to stay within those parameters so I'm sure I'll get several quilts out of these blocks. The quilts have to stay less than twin size per the Quilts of Valor web site. It will be a good exercise for me - I'm not always good at figuring out the best color schemes, etc. I sometimes avoid buying the prepackaged quilt when I'm taking a class so I force myself to pull from my stash and buy fabric to go with in order to get the experience of chosing colors. I'm sure I will continue to do Quilts of Valor in the future. There are groups all over the country that are doing Quilts of Valor and many quilt shops that participate. If your group is interested, you could check it out on their web site and maybe find one near you to work with. My local quilt shop has a group that meets monthy to make quilts for this (although I haven't participated in it yet).

Quilts of Valor
Hey, Ladies! Here are the 3 Quilts of Valor I completed at the retreat this weekend. I used all 42 squares that were sent to me, and added a few more from friends and myself. I'm quite pleased at the way they turned out, except I need to rework the side borders of #3. Not happy with the waves - I think I got them too long, and those darned half square triangles are bias and tend to stretch! I made pillowcases to match fabric in each one, and made the bindings too. I still need to piece the backings. My design team (other 5 quilters at the retreat who helped me design each quilt and were NOT afraid to pitch in advice, criticism, and squares) wouldn't let me take their pictures for you. Anyway, I hope you like them, and thanks to all who contributed once again. If you still want to contribute, feel free to PM me and send me squares. We will be continuing to make them at retreats in the future.

Kay, you and your friends did a great job of pulling these squares together into 3 beautiful Quilts of Valor that will give comfort and thanks.
I wouldn't worry about changing the side borders of Quilt #3. The waves you see are probably more noticeable to you than to any of us. As the quilt is washed and used a few times, it will take on its own character and shape of the person it is comforting.
Thank you again for giving us a way to help.

Awesome job Kay! You've created three unique and lovely settings for these collections of blocks donated by so many. I'm certain that the recipients will feel the love and appreciation of their service that these quilts represent.

Kay, the quilts are wonderful! You have an eye for color and design--these quilts are your proof I'm relieved that you had friends at your retreat to assist because this was a BIG undertaking. Thanks again for getting so many involved in such a worthy project. This will bring warmth and comfort to deserving recipients. ~Georgia

Thanks. My co-quilters helped me with arrangement and colors. I did the work, or rather the absolute fun of putting them together. We were all pleased at the end of the weekend. I was amazed that squares from so many different people and places went together so well. It was much easier than I had thought it would be. We sorted by background to start with, then went with arrangement on the design wall, and found sashing, and borders for each quilt, one at a time. Six squares came out of the stash of someone else who was collecting for QOV and I added 1 for the second quilt. The first and third quilts are all donations by mail to me. Thank you all again for the donations. Now to the backings.... and what shall I put on the labels? HMMM...

Here is the label I made for each QOV. It took me awhile of reading back thru this thread to find the name we had picked! The backings are done also, so they are ready for me to drop off at the quilt shop Thursday nite when I have class next ( and show them off).
This is a small wallhanging I completed not long ago. The flags are old postcards that have been copied onto fabric. The website, www.oldeamericaantiques.com has a ton of different old postcard fabric pieces in all different subjects. This was a kit I bought at a quilt shop but there are all kinds of patterns on the website. There are many old state postcards also.
This was my sister's Christmas present.

Wow, Kay - will you adopt me as another sister? I LOVE the quilt you made for your sister for Christmas. You do such wonderful work, and have such great eye for color and arrangement! I agree with Pat - the labels are perfect! Liga

Wellllll, that was a class I took 2 years ago. Not my pattern - it's called Starlight Retreat. Took me 2 years to finish it - the stars are somewhat complicated to say the least). You can't see the mistake I made with one of the star points - got the triangles turned around. I left it in because it would have been a major pain to rip out, and only God is perfect. None of my quilts are! It's almost all batiks - some left over from another quilt class, and the rest from my stash. Thank you for the kudos!

Dropped off the 3 quilts for quilting tonight at my class. I showed them off to my classmates during "show and tell", and they were admired by all. Here is an ammended label I changed out for the original I posted. I had an incorrect state, and I didn't want to leave it that way.

Yes, I will still take blocks if someone wanted to send them. We make blocks at several different retreats, and I can continue to collect and make another quilt. My husband was in the Navy, and I have a son in the Navy currently so it tends to be something rather close to my heart that I can do for others.
