Somewhat related to this thread about quilters and their Airstreams: I belong to a group of quilters that meets monthly at our local conservation center. Called Nature's Needlers, we do monthly squares or projects that must be connected to Missouri wildlife. I've not belonged long, but the group is a dozen years old. One of their yearly projects in 2004 was a Lewis and Clark quilt, made up of squares that related to nature and the LandC trek across Missouri, based on their journals. The plan took some leeway with the "nature" theme, including a square that represented their keelboat. Others squares were of the river, birds, animals, grasses, and so on, a lovely quilt that I hope to make someday. The current year's project is a 12 square wall hanging that represents looking through window panes onto a back yard in Missouri scene. I've missed out on this since I've just spent over a year caring for my mother who recently passed away, but I have a new machine, new interest and energy, and plan to get back in the thick of quilting again. Thought some of you might be interested in a quilting group with such a local state-centered theme. ~G

Right now I'm ripping out some quilting I did on a halloween table runner. I hate invisible thread... Grrr! Gonna redo it.

The design comes with a few sparklies, but I'm not putting them anywhere else on the jacket. There is a fine line between cute and overdone. the cat design is on the left front and I am putting a paw prints going up the opposite sleeve and around the collar.

I feel your pain! I did a lot of that when doing the gaucho cover.. well, honestly a project isn't mine unless at least one seam is gonna be ripped out.

Embroidery mostly done

Here is the front with the kitties. The paw prints are still in progress. I'm figuring out exactly where I want them and what thread color. I want them visible but not shouting. Probably going to use the darker color from the grey kiity.

Mcair! Very nice work! I think the paw prints as a very nice touch!

I agree, this thread is a good one but what makes it GREAT are the PICS!

(Plus it gives others inspiration)

Minno, that is a stunning quilt, what a treasure for your son. Is this your own design? I've never seen a pattern layout even similar to this. I'll be studying it for some time to figure out how you assembled it! Beautiful and intriguing. ~G

Very Striking Quilt. Looks Deceivingly difficult to do, but I think I figured it out. I won't say anything. I'll bet you could SELL the pattern with no trouble.

This would be a VERY fun project to do and even I who sew a lot but haven't quilted since I was a teenager could make it happen over a week of steady work. Wouldn't this be NICE to do and sell the originals as a benefit to the USO or something similar?

Donate one to the young man who was just awarded the Congressional Medal and sell 50 more - one for each state?

Respect! Paula

I see that it is made of long pieced strips of the red, white, and blue, then most is cut into the rectangles set at the angles to make the braids and some cut and sewn into the triangles...but what a creation! What arrangement of the pieces! Wonderful Are you willing to tell us how you designed this marvel? If not, that is wholly understandable. Paula's suggestions are super too. If enough of us would volunteer the quilts, a great good could come from the project. This thread is causing a lot of thought... ~G

It came from a book by John Flynn called "Braided Borders". I'm not near clever enough to make that pattern! I will say that John Flynn is an engineer and quilter. He has some really cool patterns in this book but be aware, he has you cut the strip sets in 16ths and 32nds of an inch! I don't know about you but none of my quilting rulers give THOSE dimensions! It's interesting to cut out. He warns that if you're not accurate that the pieces will not fit together well. I either cut them accurately (NOT), or I did all of them wrong the same, because it went together fairly well. You have 2 different strip sets that you cut triangles from and rectangles from. The triangles set has narrower strips than the rectangle sets. The book gives many different braided border patterns but this one caught my attention! Thank you for the compliments - I appreciate them
The Amish always put a deliberate mistake into their quilts because they say only God is perfect. I never have to worry about that.......

Our group at church made a bunch of blocks a while back. they were sent to an organization that was making quilts for the families of those lost in combat. I'll look through my papaerwork and see if I can find the name of it. They all had to be a standard size and they wanted them signed with fabric markers but other than that the rules were few.
