Quilts for House of Hope

After looking at Faithworks website and talking with Maggie, we are going to make some fleece quilts for the patients to use who stay at House for Hope.

My sewing group at church has been making these for a few years now. They are made out of squares of fleece with embroidered scriptures, flowers and other fun things. Fleece was chosen for these initially because it'd easy to work with, very durable and chemo patients get cold easily during treatment. Some of the squares have hand stitched applique shapes or flowers, so there is a way for people to participate who do not own an embroidery machine.

Maggie has decided to keep the Interstate and is planning on coming to the Moraine View rally in Central Illinois in June. We are going to have a blanket making party at this rally where we will sew together the squares we have collected. I know some of you on this thread will be there also. I will post information soon for those who cannot be there and want to send some squares.

Of all years to miss the Moraine View Rally! Bummer. We will be in Europe! We thought we had scheduled around it, but it seems that rally is a week later than we thought. Blessings to you, Maggie. Wish I could be there to give you a big hug! And blessings to all of you that are helping with this project!

I thought about that. How big are the squares?

The inside squares with designs are 8". The bigger ones they are sewn on are 12". We use anti pill fleece. Usually from Joann or Hancocks when it's on sale. We don't use the cheaper stuff anymore because too much lint builds up under the bobbin case. I had an expensive service call before we switched.

Could you post another photo when you get a chance? The one above is enough out of focus that I can't tell how the squares are made. Is the finished size of the large square 12 inches or is that the size before the squares are joined? Also, is there a theme for the squares/quilts?

Thanks,
Carol

The bigger squares are 12" before they are sewn together. I sew them wrong sides together with a 1" seam allowance and then fringe with scissors. The smaller squares with the embellishment are 8". They are sewn to the bigger one 1" from the edge so the finished design is no bigger than 6 x 6 .The theme is specific to the recipient whenever possible with about 1/2 scriptures and 1/2 other things that have meaning to that person.
We get a lot of the scriptures already digitized from sew bird stitches. I'll have to find the link to her website again. The ones she doesn't have I just make in my embroidery software. I'll get a few put together and get some good close up pictures.

I don't have a new fangled embroidery machine, so, if I participate I'll work on appliques. It would be nice to have a theme though. Thanks for the additional information and photos. I've done two baby sized rag quilts using three layers of flannel. Guess this is somewhat similar.

My first quilt is done!
Except for trimming thread, final wash, pressing.
Not perfect, but I love it and it's kiddo approved!

Nice job Mary!
I have been away for a few days going to a knitting event with my antique sock machine. Today I will get back on the quilt projects and get some better close up pictures.

Very nice! None of my quilts are perfect. I believe in the Amish way: they make sure there's a flaw in every quilt "because only God is perfect". It's my mantra!

Hello all quilters!
Mary, beautiful quilt...love the vibrant colors. I've been away from quilting too long and was thinking why not gear up with something new for our new Airstream. Found some yardage of print from several years ago but "new" to me....Camp Sur.Click image for larger version

The International Quilt Study Museum at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln is only 7 miles from Camp Away in Lincoln NE. Ask me how I know!

Are any of you going to Alumpalooza 5? This is our maiden voyage into camping and Airstreaming and thought it would be a good place to start. Would love to meet up with fellow quilters..now that I am not new to!

Hi all, we bought a few tons on stone product today after several weeks of searching for a retaining wall to support our new driveway extension for our Flying Cloud. Hope our order will next week so we can begging the stone retention wall around the driveway & rake the disturbed area before we bring her home early June.

We also need to run electric shore power to the site to replenish the batteries & get ready for our homecoming. We've got tons of work to get done before then. There will still be plenty of time to shop for essentials before our first camping adventures & may need to hold off on quilting project for now but will update you later.

Sounds like you have enough to keep you busy!
I was going to make the quilt for the second twin bed, but it may wait until fall - or at least rainy days.
The garden has been calling me :-)

Enjoy all the preparations!
