Bbnaugher, your quilt is wonderful for a grandson's graduation present. He should have it for life, always remembering his graduation time and you, his grands. Your colors look terrific for a guy. I'm preparing a batik collection to begin a quilt for my oldest grandson, just graduated from tech school and is out on his own first job in Tulsa. Your grandson is a lucky young man! ~G

I agree - quilts for guys can be a challenge, and yours is wonderful Bbnaugher! maxandgeorgia, you mention preparing a batik collection for a grandson quilt; here is a quilt using batiks I just completed and gave to my son, an avid fly-fisherman, for his birthday.

Lana, your fly fisher quilt is wonderful, combining traditional piecing and innovative art techniques. Are the fish fussy-cut and appliqued or have you used another method? I love how you designed all the way to the river bottom! I like your style ~G

The fish were cut from the same batiks collection, pieced together onto a cheesecloth backing (so as not to add bulk), then machine-appliqued onto the quilt. I used free-form swirls hand-quilted throughout the quilt to continue the effect of water movement, and gave a bit of "3-D" effect to the rainbow trout at the top by cutting into the backing after it was appliqued, adding some additional batting to the form, then hand-appliqueing a dark fish outline over the cut to hide it. (The back of the quilt was whole-cloth dark blue and green batik on which the hand quilting showed more.)

Thank you for the explanation and closeup views! This is stunning and uniquely done--wonderful I like the dimension you added to the fish at the top, as if it is jumping right out of the water. What a lucky guy to get this. ~G

Doll Quilt and Doll Pillow

This was a quick (one day) tickertape doll quilt and matching pillow I just finished for a little ones 3rd birthday. I have to admit Im loving the 3D feel of tickertape, plus its a way to use your scrap stash.

Quilting

I'm so glad I found this thread! Although after seeing the pictures- I'm feeling a little amaturish! I'm just finising my first full size quilt- I've only done baby quilts before this. I chose for my first big project a pinwheel quilt from the Smithsonian collection- that started with 2" triangles- and ends up as a queen sized quilt! Yep, I'm crazy AND I'm hand quilting it. I have the uncontrolable urge to strangle whoever invented "stitch in a ditch!" Glad to know I have other quilters out there to admire and shamelessly steal from!!!

Stupid question that I have to ask.

Hi, I was wondering about cleaning or washing these quilts. Could I [if I had one] wash a quilt in my washing machine without it shrinking, distorting, or falling apart? One time, I washed a Queen comforter in hot water and put it in a hot dryer. When I was done with it, it was too small for a Single size bed. Wife laughed, but was not happy about it.
