Question - How is diamond plate made???

I have a lot of faith in the collective knowlege here. Hopefully someone can come through with more than a guess.

I was in Wisconsin Wed-Sat and while touring a firetruck manufacuring plant we had this question. How is diamond plate made?
The back side is smooth, so it's not punched from the back.
It is made out of both steel and aluminum.
While aluminum diamond plate is widely used in this factory, it is not made there and the workers I asked didn't know how it is made.

We made a few guesses and I may be close to the truth, but I don't KNOW. My best guess is that it's forged.
I'll wait for some of you aluminum gurus to check in...
Dave

Dave,

In looking closely at Aluminum Diamond Plate it looks as though it was stamped.

So very interesting question not just one anwser! The Word "Diamond Plate" Is one of those names that was a product name that has become the "Gerneric Name"... Like Kleenex has become for tissue paper... From my understanding Alcoa (world leading producer of Aluminum products) first coined the name. To discride the diamond shape tread patern(s) on thin flat surface. So your question is how did they do that! As a child many years ago I remember going to a aluminum exrtrusion and stamping plant where they made this stuff... It is made in two ways... "Stamped" witch is realy two giant rollers, one smooth the other with a stamped pattern. So the presure of both of these giant rolls embossed a pattern on one side and other side remains the same (smooth). The other way is (bare with me I do not know the technical terms) is done with a eletronic thermal machine that flash heats the product making it molten and then it cools in the shape... kind of like a giant old fashion type rider but the key in concave not convex... If you look at the back of the thicker diamond plate the aluminum on the reverse side of the pattern looks marbled... this is from this process...
That all I know...hope that helps!

Thanks for the responses so far.
For clarification, the product I was refering to is shown in the last post, and is pictured in the left column/second row. It has a heavy "diamond" tread pattern that gives good traction under foot.
Anybody out there have an answer or can confirm the process?
Dave

Rivet Image Clarification

Hi Dave,

Good question. However, depending on your browser width, the photos shift rows and columns. Is this the one you meant? It is what I think of as diamond plate, and what I recall seeing on fire engines.

I see more SOBs now with diamond plate on the front just behind the LPG tanks in order to protect the front of the trailer. It's good stuff.
