I hate to throw water on the fire of ideas, but it's important from time to time to look reality in the face.

1. If a group of people join together to form a "club," then, humans being human, bureaucracy will result: You'll have officers (perhaps by some other label), elections, and so forth.

2. If that club collects dues, the IRS will want to know it.

3. If this group applies for non-profit status, the IRS will want to see its organizing and governance documents.

You see which direction this is going. If the club becomes popular, it will be the WBCCI with a different name.

It seems to me, then, that you've got two choices:

a. Form a club and become the WBCCI under a different name.

b. Don't form a club. Use a forum for informal idea exchange, and work within the existing club to forge reform.

I'm a founder and director of a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit corporation. We have corporate officers and rules and bylaws and such, because the US government demands it. But believe me, we spend less than 10 minutes per year addressing any of those things. We spend the rest of the time raising money for our charities.

Just because you have rules, doesn't mean you have to spend weeks or months talking about them or enacting them.

And if you don't like the rules of one organization, and there doesn't seem to be a reasonably expedient way of changing them, then it makes sense to create another organization whose rules and activities you like better.

Anyway, how 'bout Vintage Trailerites Association?

Lynn is exactly right - we went through this several years ago, it was much easier and cheaper to form the FCU than to go through the process of incorporating a new organization and getting a seperate ruling form the IRS.

We spend less than 10 min - if even that much - on formalities -

I'm not pushing the FCU as much as the FCU and the WDCU and some others is what its going to take to "fix" the WBCCI. We have been noticed and if others start new units, the message will become clear.

In our case when we started the unit we could have flown, or we could have crashed - we seem to be flying among many in the WBCCI - which is a really great thing to see - from what started as a similar discussion as this thread.

It is too bad that erosion of a noble cause erodes from within.

Erosion from within is a slow process (unless you live near a New Mexico arroyo), but so is the development of new policies and procedures within an existing organization. Personally, I do see at least gimpses of change within WBCCI, head-nods that seem suggestive of possible changes to come. The big question is, in my view, whether these changes will come about fast enough to satisfy all of us who have grown to the speed of the Internet over the last few decades.

Sorry Lynn, usually I agree with you, but this time I do not. I see nothing but the same old same old. I want a club that is about camping and having fun. I want a club that is about pride in ownership of a true American Icon. The club my dues supports is about attending the right rallies and being able to attend the right meetings. While at International I saw what it was about. I am not in support of that. I am very fortunate to belong to a Unit that shares my values, but the vast membership does not. Change is coming and often it is extreme. I cannot change things with in a system that denies a Lt Col in the United States Marine Corps his leadership just because he did not attend enough International Rallies. His leadership qualifications are better than anyone that has come along so far. Instead someone was put in his place that came from no where. His qualifications were that he had attended all the right rallies.

A new club is coming and it is coming soon.

Sorry Pee Wee, your friendship is very important to me, but your mothers vision has been stolen and subverted. Some of us are going to take it back.

Ken, you can call it what you want. I was told by our now VAC president "it is much better than it was ten years ago" EXCUSE ME? You have been putting up with this #$##$*& for ten years? Do you actually know where that phrase you used came from? Throw the baby out with the wash water. It came from the days when the whole family took a bath using the same water. Father started first and down the line to the baby. By the time the baby took his, it was so dirty that one could easily not see the baby. Your phrase is very fitting.

Erosion from within will lead to the formation of a new foundation.
