Polished New Airstream

Has anyone seen or heard of a new model AS that has been stripped and polished? When Chris Dean(CCD) posted a pic of his stolen AS,the distinguishing features were no rock guards, tinted window guard,or roof air.It looked very vintage. One step further would be to polish it.Just curious.

The type of aluminum used on the newer Airstreams cannot be polished to the degree than some of the vintage units are.

Take a look at the trailer at the middle left of the page on this link. This is a '97 Limited that a friend I know had polished and clear coated. He also asked them to use 2005 graphics. If you notice the trailer to the right of that picture, which is a vintage unit, the polish job is much more mirror like.

This is what we were told, but to the shock of GSM Vehicles who did the restoration of our 1993 Excella we have nearly a mirror finish (and they are not done with the polish job, we just needed it back for the camping season). See pictures of "The Tube" below:

hi myboyburt

i've seen the pics of your shinny new unit and it is spectacular!!!

we all know airstream stopped using al clad alum long ago. i wonder if they have gone through more than one skin since. is the skin from the plasticoat years the same as the current alcoa stuff?

i'd love to polish out my 34 once the finish starts to peel.....but it does look a little different than the 80-90s aluminum.

any info?

cheers

PM Colin H. here on the forums, he is the head dude at GSM Vehicles. He showed Leon and I samples of the different types of aluminum Airstream has used over the years and explained how each should look after refinishing. I should be able to tell you but this is "man" stuff and I went to the Bahamas in my mind as he was going over these details.

I'd love to offer a transcript for the show. However the amount of work I do already takes a lot of my personal time.

If anyone would volunteer to transcribe the show, I'd make it available on the site and give full kudos as well!

Let me know. Only serious offers that will be able to provide it on a timely and consistant basis.

Tim,

Is is possible to run the audio though a speech recognition program to reduce the amount of work?

Bill

That would be nice Bill. But there is nothing that I am aware of.

Even the *big time* podcasts use a human interface to transcribe
