Picacho State Park Closing!

Was doing research to attend a future "Picacho Rally"and see that it is Closing June 3, 2010. This is . State running out of Money? This is one of many listed in the State Closing. I can only see it getting worse in other states also!!

This is a sad day. the 4CU has held a New Year's Rally at Picacho Peak each year since we were charted and was starting to become a tradition. Now another place that isn't closing will need to be located.

Yup...Picacho is one of 3 of our favorite AZ state parks scheduled to close. And it's such a nice park, too... We are still hoping for a miracle or a reprieve, but...we shoudn't hold our communal breath for it.

At the rate that parks are closing and prices are increasing, its probably just as well that I am a fan of boondocking. Its a sign of the times.

We had some state parks closed in Washington State last year and one close to home was on the list. I found that sending letters and e-mails and cc'ing the newspaper, congressman and others made a big difference. It seems that squeeky wheels sometimes do get greased and they reversed their decision. Don't give up with out a fight! You might contact the park ranger and ask who you could talk to in the park service as well....

More than that

I my recent travel across Arizona I was very saddened by the closure of all (ALL) he rest stops I saw coming across on 10 coming Calif to New Mexico. These were nice places not just a wide spot in the road.

On the same note, my lovely home state of CT this past October, doubled the rates

at all of the state campgrounds. Feel bad for the families out there.

State parks & Rest Areas closing

My husband and I travelled across the Midwest last month to Arizona via I-40 the day of Flagstaff's 40" of snow! We have been on the road for a month, and have also learned from many park employees and volunteers in Arizona, New Mexico and Texas they have been notified of which parks will close now and which ones will close by 2/29/10.

In Apache Junction, AZ, The Lost Dutchman SP expects to close at the end of February ' sits nestled in the base of the Superstition Mountains and has breathtaking views!! We stayed in the beautiful Kartchner State Park, south of Benson, AZ and day-tripped to Tombstone, AZ; both parks will close by 3/1/10. Later, we moved on to Rockhound SP, Deming, NM and they don't know of any closings for them but do understand Rest Areas are closed. We can vouch for that.

In Texas, we'd recommend Abliene State Park and the rangers are great people. Very clean restrooms, and there's a lovely kitty who befriended us this morning at campsite #87; we fed her, but she didn't want to leave with us. The Ranger will try to find her a good home he promised. However, Texas has heard there will be closings and furlows to come.

This all makes us sad because we've enjoyed camping at state parks the past 31 years. Doesn't seem to be a simple solution regardless of which state it affects.

Arizona has always been a boom and bust state, during the recent boom years the legislature raided the "rainy day fund" for a multitude of tax cuts for special interests. Now when times are bad they've run out of accounting gimmicks to balance the budget, they've sold the Capitol building, but are still talking about tax cuts for corporations.

Arizona requires a 2/3 majority to raise taxes, but only a simple majority to lower taxes. The voters may be called on to vote for a 1% increase in the state sales tax, which is unlikely to pass under the current economic conditions.

So here we are, the state is broke, and the people suffer from the stupidity of the legislature.

The town of Camp Verde, recognizing the economic benefit it receives from the Fort Verde SP is trying to raise money to keep the park open. They've raised $18,000 to keep the park open through March, while they try to develop a longer term plan.

Eight parks have already closed, thirteen more to go, leaving only nine to remain open, some for only 5 days a week, oh, and yes, fees are going up next month, 20-100% even for the ones that are closing!

These State Parks are the natural, cultural, and historical souls of our country. We should be raising holy h... about this with our so-called government representatives. When the last legislator and all his/her assistants, sycophants, girlfriends/boyfriends, expense accounts, per diems and all must lock his/her office door due to lack of funds, then the State Parks should be considered for closing.

How true.
So is the U.S.A.We are now owned by China because we keep sending stupid folks to Wash.DC. and all they can do is waste, waste, waste OUR tax $$.
I think the U.S.A. as us old folks have known it is at an end. I feel sorry for my Grand Kids and Great Grand Kids.

I am holding out hope that it is all politics to infuriate the citizens of AZ to take a stand on this issue. The State Park system is a moneymaker for the state if they would just leave the revenue out of the general fund. If the state allows this to happen, there will be some parks that will never re open since the land was granted by family trusts which state that if the parks are closed for a specific number of days... the land will revert back to the families that donated the land in the first place. If Picacho closes in June it is not really a big deal since it lies relatively dormant during the hot months. We will see if they re-open during the lucrative busy months from November - May... Just my two cents. I see this as a ploy to get folks in AZ riled up.
