Closing Parks

We lose our Job's ,lose our Home's ,lose our State Park's. Can't afford private campground's. But were lucky to own our truck and Airstream. We can live under bridges or BLM land.
Will start sending letters and e-mails to state offices.

Drove down I10 from Casa Grande today and passed Picacho Peak SP. Looked like the CG was pretty full. I'm at Catalina which is full - at least as far as hookup spots go.

Someone on here said Kartchener Caverns was closing. Not true and never was scheduled to close - this is probably the most profitable of all the AZ SP's.

Kartchner State Park, Benson, AZ

My comment about KSP came from a list I saw posted on the wall at the Tombstone Museum which is also scheduled to close but at the end of February. KSP's name was on the list with two others and slated for 3/31. The Ranger at Tombstone was the person who explained the notice of closure.

the Governer is seeking authority in the May 18 special election to divert money from the voter approved Heritage Fund to the general fund. (Called a "one time step" but without expiration.)

If you think that the 2010 State Parks budget is bad, don't look at the Gov's proposed 2011 budget.

Arizona was the last to create a State Park system, and may well be the first to end one.

New AZ Park Info

There's bill being introduced into the AZ legislature to keep parks open...

See article in the Arizona Daily Sun (Phx) here...

Not perfect, but...

It's all about Money

My brother lives in Phoenix and said he'd read in the paper (ok, so this is now 2nd-3rd hand?) that AZ did a study about closing the parks. It'd cost about $1.5M to close them, yet maintain them, versus the $3.?M to just keep them open. I guess, in the big scheme of things, a million here or there, not alot of money in a state govt. He thought they were examining the closures again. We were hopeful since we really enjoyed Picacho at New Years.

Great News Hope the Park's remain Open. It seem's like they would loose out on tourist money if there closed.

There is Hope

In a meeting held 18 March the Arizona State Parks Board has agreed to allow staff to enter into agreements with rural communities, etc, to keep certain Arizona State Parks open. Yea! And Roper Lake, which was scheduled to closed 29 March has been given an extension with the help of the Arizona Fish & Game Dept till 3 June allowing time to work toward a solution to keep it open permanently. Read about it HERE! All parks are not saved just yet, but this is great news!

$tatus of the $tate Parks

Here is a not so optimistic, but probably realistic asessment of the future of the Arizona State Park system:

Arizona parks system's future in doubt

The Parks that are not closing as scheduled will essentially become city parks. Parks that don't make a profit and don't have a sponsoring community or organization are out of luck. Parks that do make a profit are at risk of privatization if some of our legislators have their way.

the Governor wants to take the State Parks share of the voter approved Heritage Fund and put it in the bottomless pit of the State General Fund, meanwhile the Legislature continues to attempt to revive the payday loan industry, which was soundly rejected by the voters of the State of Arizona.

According to the Arizona State Parks Foundation:
Quote:
The Legislature is seeking $205 million in cuts to begin to address a deficit currently estimated at $1.5 billion. The proposed cuts to State Parks would equate to 5% of their solution, while State Parks currently receives less than 1/10 of 1% of the overall state budget. Additionally, State Parks receives NO money from the State General Fund, but the impact of the park system on the state economy is more than $266 million.
Maybe the payday lenders should take over the Parks, and then offer short term loans at 400% interest to the po' folks who won't be able afford the increased entry fees.
