Paranoia or Perceptive?????

So as I'm coming out my front door to go downtown this evening, a black pickup with two young (20ish) men flies up my driveway....

20 something: "are you selling that trailer?".....

me: " is there a for sale sign on it?"

20 something: "no, but where looking for one to buy"

me: "Ebay...craigslist....classifieds....airforums.com , those are the places you can find them for sale"

20 something: "oh, we're wanting one to take to Disneyworld....thanks for the tip"

Sensing my suspicion the driver apologized for interrupting me, and left. So after my radar went off, we changed plans and are staying home for the night. I parked my car in front of the tongue to hopefully discourage that "Disney"phile from returning.

Is it possible to feel "too protective" of these trailers? I just read where another Airstream was stolen and it's just sickening to hear.

Sounds suspicious. I think I would error on the side of caution. Blocking vehicles and coupler locks at the very least.

Good luck, Dan

I'd buy a coupler lock just to be safe

Unfortunately not, thought about it after the fact. I was pulling a cooler, carrying a blanket and getting kids in the car to go to an outdoor theater event when they came up. Changed plans for the night. So my car is blocking it now, we've had a coupler lock on it the whole time, but I was just not buying their story.

I'd leave all my porch lights on and maybe in the front windows as well. 20 somethings don't just stop and ask if a AS is for sale unless they are richer than I was when I was 20!

I'd still notify the authorities.
Maybe they can step up patrol a bit in your neighborhood and be on the lookout for the vehicle in question.
You'll feel better and it couldn't hurt.

I have bought a few with that exact technique. Most the time you strike out, sometimes you have some good conversation. Once in a while you score.

The Disney line sounds a bit Goofy though.

i never thought i would use the camera in my cell phone. it is great for times like this. snap a quick picture and walk away like you're not interested in them. don't forget to 'save' it after the shot is taken.

I think what creeps me out is that a friend told me the other day that a guy in the Wal-Mart parking lot asked her if he could borrow her two year old daughter to get his keys out of his locked van...so someone coming up to the house was unnerving...

Agreed! And the third (can't remember his name) doesn't require accuracy, luckily.

Then again, if they were serious about taking it, why would they provide you a means to identify them (and their vehicle) before they did it?

Probably a couple of Airstream fans with stars in their eyes who thought they could pick up an old trailer for a couple thousand bucks. Not readers of this board, and not people who have done much shopping for an Airstream.

The security precautions are a good idea though. You never know.

I'd take a field trip out to a craggy/rocky area and pick up a half dozen or so of nice fat Diamond Back Rattlers...

Tie a heavy cord (here's the hard part...!)behind each rattler's head - tie the other end to the trailer tongue!

Maybe give em' a cardboard box for shelter at night...

Any attempt for someone to 'borrow' your AS should be met with some resistance as your new found 'friends' start singing when they're disturbed!

Any 'authorized' use of your AS might cause you to experience some delay as you become acclimated to the effects of snake bite anti-venom....

Maybe Arizona is different, but we regularly get people slowing as they pass our house (trailer is parked alongside) asking whether it's for sale. Also, we are frequently asked the same by people in an adjacent car when we are stopped at lights with our Bambi is in tow. I think most people don't know that Airstreams are still in production; and when they see one in good condition, they think they can get a nice looking trailer cheap, because it must be old. Most are surprised when we tell them that it's only a couple of years old, and they can buy a new one for $$$. (They usually look puzzled that they are relatively expensive.)

I know that it's a little unnerving, but our Airstream is still parked in the driveway (since 2005). It just shows how others view Airstreams -- they want one...

that's the truth....
my theory is that they were going to pull up and "check the trailer out".....maybe because they would like one, or they wanted to see how secure it is sitting there....i guarantee they weren't expecting me to come out my door at that moment.....whatever the case, it needs to be stored inside now since we're getting farther along so that's what we're doing today....this is where we're at today(new a/c is on now, but not in pic)....
