One man's point of view
I ran across a funny eBay listing for a '62 Safari. I've included the text from the listing below as the eBay listing link will expire over time:
1962 Airstream Safari RV Camper Fish House UGLY PROJECT
If you will consider this item as "parts" then you won't be misled, disappointed, surprised, remorseful or otherwise miffed.
This is the ugliest Airstream you will see on ebay this year and will require lots of cash, time and energy.
If you don't possess these 3 things then please don't ask silly questions or place zealous bids
This is NOT an RV & here are the reasons why:You can't cook in it - no stove
You can't stay warm in it - no heater
You can't sleep in it - No beds
You can't have a meal in it - no tables or chairs
You can't store cold beer in it - no refrigerator
You can't stay cool in it - no a/c
You can't recycle beer in it - no toilet
You can't be a couch potato in it - being a potato not a problem but missing couch
You can't store a change of clothes in it - missing cabinets and wardrobes
You can't shower in it - missing sprayer
You can't see very good at night in it - lots of light fixtures removed
You can't camp in remote areas - No power supply, only standard 115v electricity with 50' cord.
Hence the listing in Parts and Accessories....
The perfect starting point for a Fish House or Storage building. If you ever wanted to annoy the neighbors this unit has a grand history of being the most obnoxious lawn ornament available. Pink Flamingos, cheezy wind ornaments, concrete donkey carts and shiny gazing balls HAVE NOTHING ON THIS instant landscape enhancer!!! (aluminum Christmas Tree not included)
A great item to convert for your backyard office or place to escape on Sundays for 9 hours of football. Plenty of room for large television and 4 or 5 recliners for you and your buddy's ultimate NFL party shack! There's plenty of electricity to power the fridge, pizza oven, television and a space heater.
There are already some holes in the subfloor so conversion of this unit to an Ice Fishing House is a natural! You know how fish are attracted to "shiny things" - need I say more? I predict that I do not. Just say NO to square shacks!
When you're done using this for your favorite activity simply take the unit to your local aluminum recycle center and ask them to pay you for 100's of pounds of aluminum sheets at .50 cents a lb.
I towed this unit 70 miles on the day I was instructed by my wife to go and "retrieve the prize" - my opinion (which you surely don't respect by now) is that you could tow this on a 2" ball with a set of tow lights. It has new tires and I have no idea if bearings are needed. Lights and wiring are yet another mystery that ONLY YOU could possibly solve.
The front end has a broken window, huge dent and as you see in the photo the window is no longer square. There is a welded repair on the hitch by an RV shop. There are parts of the belly panel that are bent/twisted. There is one side window that needs a new piece of glass. The door hinges aren't attached to the inner door that fits inside the front door. What a goofy set up! What would have been so wrong with a screen door?
There are multiple scrapes and dings on all sides and the top has a nice cave up front but out of view. There are many years of duct tape residue around window frames. There are 2 new smoke-colored roof vents and the square one on back is meticulously held down with a brick but the window lifts are in the unit. The rectangle vent in front was professionally installed by RV dealer.
The dream here was that the unit would get tons of money, time, energy and love thrown at it and become a pristine and profitable concession trailer. As with most dreams, sooner than later reality shows up and the fun comes to a screeching halt.
I will give you a piece of paper so that you can complete your project with proper documentation.
This bucket of parts is sold as is with no warranties, promises or guarantees implied. All fees, taxes associated with the transfer of property is the responsibility of winning bidder. State of Minnesota takes 4 months to figure things out.
Storage fee of $30 per month kicks in on October 1, 2007.
All monies are NON-REFUNDABLE and this item can not be returned for any reason.
Figure out your own shipping from 55063 or come and pick it up.
Item for sale locally and auction ends for any reason at any time.
No positive spins here, just an old trailer that might have the parts you need to restore another project.
Paperwork claims a 62 model but could be a 61. You pros will figure it out.
Total payment due via paypal within 24 hours of auction end. (NO EXCUSES)
Thank you!

Yuki,
SaabLover started talking about this one at the end of the "Found Homeless" thread yesterday. It really needs to become a parts trailer.

At least he didn't say "It's just a polish job away from being perfect".
His buy-it-now is a tad high, but he has included a "best offer" option, he may get rid of his albatross yet...

This guy cracks me up with... "There are already some holes in the subfloor so conversion of this unit to an Ice Fishing House is a natural! You know how fish are attracted to "shiny things" - need I say more?"
Great sense of humor!

on the bright side, you don't have to have someone inspect the trailer before buying it!

The question and answer session so far is pretty hilarious too. Made me sad that he only has one item for sale right now - I wanted to read more!

Aww, c'mon Ingrid. This is only an hour east of where I live and I was waiting for a PM ... $2 a mile and $50/hour -- I'll go look at it. NOT!

If somebody else will buy that trailer, they deserve paying for your costs all the way from Florida. Not a bad plan though -- skeeters are waning and we had our first frost last night. Speaking for Don, we withdraw our offers to inspect.
I apologize if the eBay seller reads this. I'll crawl back in my hole now...

This ad is a breath of fresh air for an Airstream auction on Ebay!
The guy obviously has an exact dollar amount he needs to replace from the experiment-gone-wrong with the Buy It Now price!
If he were here on the forums I would give him TONS of karma!

Perhaps he is quoting the lower price that scrap houses pay when there are mixed materials.
