once upon a midnight dreary, while i ...
ponder, weak and weary......years ago as a young lad, after recently returning from across the pond... i set up house in chicago...a city of neighborhoods....(now a neighborhood of cities).....i went down to the corner where the neighborhood gin mill was located....i made aquaintance and later friendship with a person whom had been born and raised in wisc....... he always used the term"Good People"..."they are good people"i finally inquired as to what?...his answer was that good people are not always people that emulate your lifestyle, but are still "good people"...he has passed a long time ago....but recently i thought of him and wondered if this was a midwestern term, or just unique individualism....sooo...my question...How many of you out there use or have heard this term?...or are "good people"?...

This reminds me of my first summer visiting with the in-law in Mo..(Trust me the answer to your question lies within.)
My father in law, being the proud man he was of his newest son-in-law, asked me to go with him to town to meet some of his life long friends..Quite a treat for me, a city slicker, to be sitting on the old hotel's stone wall engaged in a deep, midwestern conversation..
After sitting there for several minutes...
Went something like this: 1st farmer:"Gonna be a hot day.",2nd farmer: "Reckon so.", 3rd farmer:"Reckon".
What do you think my response was??

Good people...
...isn't just a midwestern term. It is also commonly used in Texas, as in "He's good people."

I have found that phrase used just about everywhere.
I find it rather irritating. Usually, do to the context in which it is used.
More often than not, I have found the phrase used to vouch for someone of questionable character.
"Oh .. don't worry about him .. he's good people."
"I know .. I know ... I'll probably never see the money I loaned her ... but she's good people."
Makes me sick.

Good people - the topic of this thread.
Better people - your suggestion (duly noted).
Best people - most of the "people" on this forum.
I'll hang my hat here for a while.

Donnall, cut it out. I almost spit single-malt Scotch on my keyboard.
Porky, sounds like you're on the right track. There are some excellent people on this board.
Where in California is Chaos? (That's a straight line for all you punsters out there.)
