That's a nice one, Don, thanks! Always learning about new talent and tunes here . . .

The lyrics . . .

"Well, I go over to the river
To soothe my mind
To ponder over
The crazy days of my life
Just sit and watch the river flow"

. . . are reminiscent of this tune posted on the OTRA I thread:

Here is one cut from The Road To Escondido, with a great beat and the essence of JJ Cale's and Eric Clapton's basic (good) simplicity IMO.

Great beat and lyrics:

I would like to share some truly cool and classic jazz numbers, first off, a group of college nerds, Mr Brubeck and friends. (most of my favorite musicians are dead)

Next up Mr. Miles Davis and Mr. John Coltrane.....this comes pretty close to the definition of "cool" for me

And finally will end the night on an up-note, Mr. Poncho Sanches' vibrant version of "Watermelon Man" I got to see them perform this at the University of Arizona Centennial Hall.

Very cool jazz, indeed. I have seen Brubeck live twice. The first a couple of years after the Time Out album was released. He had Paul Desmond on sax and Joe Morello on drums. Great post.

Morello's solo on the long version is legendary. And of course the song was written by Mr. Desmond. Paul Desmond's incredible talent was only outdone by his drinking which eventually led to his death at only 53.

Speaking of short careers did you know Coltrane really didn't become recognized until he was 30 and he was dead at 41. What he accomplished in those 11 years, despite his addiction (although some may argue because of his addiction) was nearly unbelievable.

. . . which themes might lead to this classic somber number . . .

Nice duet from Johnny Cash and Kris Kristofferson . . .

PS -- a nervous Kris and both so young! RIP JC.

A great tune, from a master, for being at home with a loved one, and a good glass of bourbon . . . thanks.

Have a good long weekend.

My mom went to HS with Mr. Brubeck and took piano lessons from his mom. My sister followed suit with the piano...I took up the trumpet. That is until the 6 chairs was reduced 4 chairs and I moved to Baritone...and eventually ran out of chairs there (translation, I was terrible). Wish I had leaned to play the piano. He was a great role model around town.

Brubeck would often perform in his home town when the Concord Jazz Festival got off the ground at a neighborhood park and eventually morphing into a jazz label (Concord Jazz) and eventually merging with Fantasy Records.

This somewhat somber tune popped up in our universe recently.

An amazing family connection, Bob! Thanks for the recollection.

Bob's George Straight number on the other thread led to this more somber road tune.

"I've been away too long"

"Don't bother comin' home . . . somebody new . . . "

Just discovered this on the PBS show of Joan Baez's 75th birthday, with Richard singing a duet of this fine number, She Never Could Resist A Winding Road.

" . . . the open road whispered in her ear . . . "

Another somber road song . . .

PS -- Some of his other songs are on this thread, as well as the OTRA I thread.

Another good somber one from Arlo Guthrie, for these troubled times IMO. Click on the link at the top for a new window, which will lead to more great tunes.
