Great question from the Doctor. Kind of like "Is that you Bubba?" asked of Nixon . . .

those that have passed in three's it seems

First it was Glenn Frye. What a contribution he has made with the Eagles. Their songs are standard issue. Then David Bowie. He's not part of my collection, but he was very creative and well ahead of others in many ways. I have a lot of respect for his work.

Then Dan Hicks...getting close to home (SF bay area). We had tix for him here in Eugene last spring that was cancelled for health reasons; The last time we saw him before that was his 60th BD show in 2001 at the Warfield in SF. Everyone that ever had played with him was there it seemed....including the original Hot Licks

to name a few favorites
" I scare myself "
" Coast to Coast "
" Dig a Little Deeper"
" Canned Music "
" Shootin Straight "
" Bar Stool Boogie "

and the classic " How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away )

Lyrics and tunes don't get any better. Thanks Dan.

to quote Jerry Garcia on " Ripple "

"...Let there be songs to fill the air..."

RIP Dan Hicks.

Well said Bob. Thanks for a great post . . .

Pam Gadd has a good song on the theme of loss, but more in the bluegrass tradition . . . All The Old Men Are Gone . . . but I can't find a good version of it right now.

Peter, thanks, I love the bluegrass/mandolin and the theme. I need to revisit with headphones to pick up all the lyrics. Pick'n was clear as a bell. This probably isn't the best version, but works for me. Thanks for the tip. The music of legends lives on

here is a better imo version

Thanks Bob, that is the one. And yes the second one is better, especially the intro. Appreciate that. The original studio recording has clearer vocals and lyrics, as you might guess . . .

When I dropped off the AS for LP drains and other warranty work today. I talked to the guy that moves trailer around the site that I have gotten to know a bit. Seems he too is a bay area native (of late boomer vintage and lover of 60's-70's SF music). I mentioned Dan Hicks' passing recently and he responded with did you hear of Paul Kantner's passing a few days before.

Very sad. Brings back many memories of that eras music.

'Far out, man . . . "

I always like the instrumental Embryonic Journey (27:18), and of course the 60's classic White Rabbit (29:10).

Does the fact that I remember these tunes mean that I wasn't fully there in the 60's?

"All the old men are going . . . " RIP

Thanks Bob.

[OTRA15]

[White Rabbit (29:10) ] iconic to say the least

[Embryonic Journey (27:18)] This always reminds me of "Dicky Betts ~ Little Martha" ...Jorma Kaukonen and Dicky Betts at their best. Sweet pickin'n on both accounts.

Another favorite of mine on SP is "My Best Friend" ( 6:11) Makes me wonder if David Crosby influenced the production like he did with American Beauty.

[ "All the old men are going . . . " RIP ] but their music and our memories of them will remain forever.

see ... we survived he 60's and do remember it

Yeah, when My Best Friend starts, it sounds like the Mamas and Papas, you know? The harmonies . . .

OK, traveling back in The Time Machine, how about these two from It's A Beautiful Day?

The listenin' takes me back . . .

The harmonies . . . for sure

and CSN...again the Crosby harmonic influence

White Bird...classic....everybody had the album (or 4 track). I still have the vinyl and pull it out once in awhile...seems the Surrealistic Pillow influence here to, same time frame...same city. It was the favorite of one of my college roommates.

[The listenin' takes me back . . . ] ditto

Shifting gears...I often put this on for some easy listening....often at dinner prep
