Congratulations, Rodney! Many of us need to follow suit, myself included. Tell us about your program.

Great work!

Losing weight takes lots of self discipline and will power! I need to find some of that. How are you doing it?? Do tell us about your plan!

It is a simple plan

Diet wise I spent two weeks gradually reducing the amount I was eating. I decided if I couldn't eat the volume I had been, I sure as heck was going to eat good food. High quality and tasty, this turned out to be easy. I committed to whole grains, and fruits and veggies as much as possible. I bake my own bread.

Knowing how many calories going in/out is essential. Lots and lots of measuring to prevent portion creep. I also have a spread sheet that allows me to keep an eye on my eating. One meal a week I don't count what I eat.

Lots of exercise: I favor lower intensity over longer periods of time, but just do what works.

I weigh in daily and record that along with several tape measurements (weekly) to monitor progress. I have an excel work book for all the tracking. The records help me not only because I am a data dork, but it helps me keep identify what does and doesn't work.

Finally, I think that having a challenging goal with a specific deadline is important for me- I have another 5 weeks and 10 lbs to go to the goal. And when I get there, I will have sustainable habits.

Congrats, Rodney! I've been doing something similar as well. I did the couch to 5k running program and have been watching my food intake since January. I'm down 20 pounds and am feeling a lot better. I'll bet you're feeling a lot better and more energetic, no?

Congratulations Gary! I am not sure what my total is going to end up being. Once I get rid of some more of the gut I will figure out what my new norm should be. I'm guessing that another 20 is going to have to come off though

Congrats Rodney, and it makes it that much better that you did it the hard way without the use of platyhelminth ova or porcine thyroid hormones

Here's a great free site that has an amazing database of foods and deducts calories from your total allowed caloric count for exercises.

Being a data dork I have an MS Excel sheet for this with several sheets for tracking calories in, weights and measurements over time (with graphs, of course). This has been very important to me both to keep motivated and to make sure that I know what is going in and out. Measuring cups are pretty important as well.

Way to go, Rodney! I'm there with ya as I've dropped 40 pounds. It was a lot to carry and it was taking a toll. I no longer feel like my old tired, achy self. I used to just chalk it up to being middle-aged, but it was the lifestyle and extra weight that had me feeling like that.

Basically I shop the outer aisles at the store and prep fresh foods at home. I try to buy organic and avoid processed, canned and frozen foods and all the chemicals and sodium they contain. Regular exercise, too. My only regret is not having done this years ago. Better late than never.
