Question non secure sites

I just suscribed on line to the new Airstream Way of Life magazine & am looking forward to my first issue. My question is; how risky is it to give my credit card number on a non secure site.? This is a question after the fact so I guess it is a moot point. Still would like to have an answer for future reference.

Talking

I'll let you know just as soon as I get the stuff I ordered on YOUR card

Just kidding!

I would be less inclined to use a non-secure site just to be safe.

Although remote, it is much easier for a savvy bad guy to read the data packets and extract personal info if it's not secure.

Carolyn ...

I use a Credit Card that provides Virtual Account Numbers ... a substitute account number for every web purchase ... so my real credit card number is never exposed to anyone.

I also have $0 liability for unauthorized charges on my account .. a feature provided by my CC company. Having said that ... I still refuse to order on an unsecured site.

I thought Airstream Life was now secure?

ordering from non-secure sites

When I have to order from a site that is not secure, I will send my info in three separate emails. The first email is the last half of the card number, the second email, the first half, and the third the expiration date. Not perfect, but someone will have to get three emails, and put them in the correct order, to do them any good.

I don't even sign into eBay without an SSL (secure) connection. I would not suggest transmitting credit card info via an unsecured site, over a cell phone, cordless phone (without a scrambler) or via email that does not encrypt.

There is a reason there is encryption, you should use it or find another way to make a payment. PayPal comes to mind.

BTW, nice try with the three seperate emails. In particular if on a cable system, easy to capture all packets downstream, so that only half works really. Encryption or find another way. Seriously...it doesn't matter how non liable you are, it's a PITA to have to go through all the B.S.....
