New Worm?

I just heard on evening news about a new "worm" that is supposed to cause a lot of mischief in our computers after midnight tonight. Is this so? How does one go about guarding against something new? Maybe I'm just gullible. Advice or assurances appreciated. ~G

Well from what I heard it will be delivered via an email attachment. Also this warning might be a little overblown and nothing much may transpire.

We got some warnings at work about not opening attachments with the name family pictures or something of that nature. Just make sure your virus protection is up to date and use caution on email attachments.

Saw it on Snopes

As usual, don't open attachments and keep your virus checker up to date, and hope for the best.

Might be a good time to do your annual data back-up. Especially .doc, .xls, .pdf files.

You could go run out and buy a new Mac and sleep easy and let the PC users worry about the latest worm.

Once again, the simplest answer is to use computers with any operating system other than that produced by Microsoft. Mac and Linux OSes are not affected by this worm.

Kama Sutra Worm

If you're hit with it, Symantec's website is a good source for the fix.

In general, use www.symantec.com

If you're hit with the worm, see http://securityresponse.symantec.com...w.oror@mm.html

On NPR this morning they said it was an attachment to an e-mail you got from a pornographic web site. I think I'm safe.

Glad to know I have nothing to worry about either!

I imagine most of us don't have to worry about it! Backups are always a good thing too, though. It's never a bad time to think about what's on your computer that you'd hate to lose and back it up.

I'd like to switch to a Mac or Lunix, but I can't imagine the hassle of switching all the software we use for our business over to a new platform.

Being on the Windows platform probably accounts for your thinking that moving is a hassle.

Actually, it's so simple it verges on fun. It's the first WOW that switchers tend to experience. To learn about the various approaches, visit http://www.apple.com/switch/howto/. Also, many software vendors offer "cross-grades." Often, cross-grades are free or a nominal amount.
