New words and phrases

As we all know, the English language is a living, breathing life form changing every day with the addition of new words and phrases. I enjoy watching the addition of new words to the dictionary every year and also have my list of favorites that I've encountered in my travels. Feel free to add your favorite new word or phrase to this thread.

Here's my latest favorites which includes one with a RV theme:

1) trailer dentist -- someone who repairs dents, hail damage, and other types of minor damage on the exterior of RV trailers.

2) baggravation -- this is the feeling of annoyance I feel at the airport while I wait for my bags at the airport especially while I watch everyone else pick up their bags ahead of me.

My new word....

My favorite new word is......
Truthiness........From the "Colbert Report" on comedy central. It means what Stephen Colbert deems to be the truth! Does anyone else watch this show? Carla & I love it!

One of my wife's favorites is "Garpetulation", which is the steady accumulation of garbage in the house, namely "Junque Mail".

My all-time favorite is "expresshole" meaning a person who takes more than 9 items in a grocery store express lane. This was in the book entitled Sniglets by Rich Hall. Sniglets are words that are not in the dictionery but should be. I gotta find that book because mine was misplaced years ago. Thanks for the reminder, Amazon here I come.

FRUITWORTHY

Former mayor of Chicago, Jane Byrne, used this word to describe a community building project. It's an obvious and, to me, amusing concatenation of two other words appropriate to the occasion.

Two more words -- Airstream origin

I'm adding two more words to the list. These are words I encountered for the first time on this forum! Both mean the same thing -- an addiction or craving for Airstream trailers.

1) alumaholism
2) aluminitis

I kinda like "unobtainium", which describes the type of glass used for windows in the mid-60's....

Sniggletts

there used to be a show - radio or TV, can't remember - that would have a section called Snigglets. Words that don't exist, but when you hear them, their meaning is obvious.

My favorite: "downpause". Its what happens when you're driving in heavy rain, and go under an overpass. The rain 'downpauses'.

Yuki,
Technically, alumaholism and aluminitis are not the same.

An alumaholic is addicted to aluminum and hence alumaholism is the diseased condition caused by obsession with and prolonged exposure to old aluminum trailers.

Aluminitis is technically, inflamed aluminum. Hmmm. Perhaps one of our forum physicians could clear this up.

I think we are all remembering a show on HBO a looooong time ago called "Snigglets" with Rich Hall. I think this was way back in the early '80's, IIRC. I didn't know about a book. I'd like to see it, that's got to be a hoot.

My favorite? Prembablembamation: That thing you do when you drop a letter in the box at the post office; you can't refuse opening the door to make sure it went down the shoot.

OK, so I couldn't stand it. I had to "google" it. Here's the wikipedia article on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniglet.

Hey there's one for you "Google it". A noun being used as a verb. And the noun is not being used as intended.

The only Snigglet I could remember is :

"Fenderbergs"

Those huge chunks of ice that form behind your wheels when you are driving in snow.

For those of you interested in the esoteric, exotic and sometimes misuse of the English language I've got a show for you.
Check your local National Public Radio station and see if the carry the program "A Way With Words" hosted by Richard Lederer. A strangely interesting, odd little show, dealing with the state of the language as we know it. (Yes, I know I spend way too much time commuting in the car.)

He refers to his listeners as verbivores.

Tom.

Funsucker: One who sucks the fun out of everything.

My students like to use this one with that kid that thinks any fun thing is stupid.
