I am making a tote bag and am having some trouble with a pattern for an airstream.

I originally got a silvery pleather for the AS, but am not liking it, and all needle marks will really show as large holes. I will probably end up getting a gray fabric or just a fun small print fabric for the AS and I want a teal color to accent the bottom of the outside.
The bag itself I have made before, I just can't seem to get the AS part figured out. I want something simple that still is recognized as an AS.
I thought it would be kind of fun to have the edges of the AS unhemmed so it will fray a little outside of the sewn edge. Similar to this:

I should also note, I recently started sewing and have done a couple of rag quilts and small easy items, this is my first time trying anything applique, and I have little to no experience with patterns. Any help would be great, thank you!!
