Question Need help from the quilters please!!

I am making a tote bag and am having some trouble with a pattern for an airstream.

Heidi Grace Fabric- Botanical Wood*: premium quilting fabric*: quilting fabric & kits*: fabric*: *Shop | Joann.com
This will be the outside.

Heidi Grace Fabric- Birdhouse Words*: premium quilting fabric*: quilting fabric & kits*: fabric*: *Shop | Joann.com
This will be the inside.

I originally got a silvery pleather for the AS, but am not liking it, and all needle marks will really show as large holes. I will probably end up getting a gray fabric or just a fun small print fabric for the AS and I want a teal color to accent the bottom of the outside.

The bag itself I have made before, I just can't seem to get the AS part figured out. I want something simple that still is recognized as an AS.

I thought it would be kind of fun to have the edges of the AS unhemmed so it will fray a little outside of the sewn edge. Similar to this:

I should also note, I recently started sewing and have done a couple of rag quilts and small easy items, this is my first time trying anything applique, and I have little to no experience with patterns. Any help would be great, thank you!!

I have not tried this for applique but maybe play around with "insulbrite". It's the fabric you use when making travel ironing pads and ironing board covers. It worked great when's made my portable pad! Your LQS might have it , but Joann does. Good luck! Show pics when you've finished

If I were doing straight appliqués and cotton fabrics, hands down I would use "heat 'n Bond lite" and press on the back of a piece of fabric slightly larger than my appliqués. Cut out the shape and pesl off the paper and press on the right side of the base fabric. You can zig zag or decorative stitch the edges. Play around with it! You can also use Stictj and tear on the back as a stabilizer before you appliqué stitch for a better base. Then tear excess off. Have fun
