Mother's Day 2007

This is dedicated to all the Moms who teach us the little traditions.
For some this may be Wish Bones. Here in the south many call it the Pulley Bone.
Our family always played the game out of sight under the table.
Even with an empty nest it is a game Blanche and I still play.

Wish I could remember the first time
we put our hands under the table

A ritual for so many families
passed along to each new song
The importance changing with time

Our moment is flavored by a pause
a special look between our faces
smiling at what is to come

My gender makes me tug first
She holds her place
patient from knowing how to mother

This is who she is
Having an advantage
not from strength but tenderness

No matter how it breaks there are no losers
One gets a wish the other a thought
The blessing lingers on the finger tips

Our wishes are all grown up now
no longer for things
just for longer.

We had a lovely day: lots of beautiful outdoor gardening time, long phone conversation with my mother (89), afternoon visit from one daughter and grandson, phone call and catch up news from other daughter, smoked ribs dinner with son and family. May you all be so blessed and surrounded by people you love and who love you. Special thoughts for those mothers with sons and daughters and loved ones serving over seas today~G
