Cool Monte Verde to go "Shady Dell" in the mountains?

So my wife (Maria) has it in her head to buy some vintage rigs and put them on the park to rent out, a la Shady Dell. Nice idea, but you know who's going to be the one to fix rigs up? (If you guess "Maria," you're wrong.)

Maybe I can convince her just to do ONE rental Airstream (namely, ours), and then we buy a different one for ourselves. There was a nice-looking 95 (or so) AS moho on Ebay this morning ...

I suppose there are a number of ways to look at this.

1. It's a terrible idea!

2. The purchase & repair could be written off as a business expense against some future hoped for profits.

3. If you had an array of vintage Airstreams needing refurbishment parked at your place, you could host next year's "Restoration Rally". People with similar problems on their own Airstreams could come to the rally and practice the repairs on your Airsteams. Then they would know how to do their own the right way

4. See No. 1.

I can picture Maria with her A-ha moment, adding a la Shady Dell to your park. Then I see you with YOUR A-ha moment...hmmm...so many to choose from Best wishes! ~G

Maybe I should just demand that she show the profit before she gets on ebay and buys something!

Personally, I don't think the idea is that bad. But then I wish she'd get somebody else to do all the work. I've got my hands full just keeping our rig on the road!

For Sale?

I understand Shady Dell has been put up for sale several times by the owner - who hasn't been able to unload it. I could be wrong about that, but I think it was even on ebay once.

Nothing like a reality check. Sounds like a fantastic idea IF you have just won a big lottery AND you can find reliable help.

Humm.

Well, maybe it has been for sale, but at least it doesn't snow there!

Sou'wester Lodge

The Sou'wester Lodge in Ilwaco, WA, has spaces for rent as well as old trailers used ad cabins. Some are Airstreams, others include Spartans and a collection of other older units. None have been restored to perfection, but all have been cleaned up and made usable. The grounds are not fancy, but clean and pretty well kept.

Sou'wester Lodge has been there since 1892, so they must be doing something right.

I believe I read elsewhere on the forum that the Shady Dell has a new owner. I suspect in a different location and with the heightened awareness of vintage trailers in general that a set up could be profitable. Unlike an RV lot though they are more like motel rooms so would need a different level of service and increased maintenance so it could result in more work than you want to take on.

Darn tootin! Our camping cabin is usually pretty maintenance-free (just cleaning), but sometimes we get guests who cause more damage than it's worth. I can't even imagine what those types of guests might do to a nice, vintage Airstream!

There is also a park in east-central New York State which has vintage trailers for rent as cabins. It was mentioned on TheVAP.com.

I think Shady Dell's only problem is location. In the right place, this could be a great idea. Look at all the state parks that are adding camping cabins and huts. There are people who want to camp but don't have a trailer, or want to go out and join their friends who do have a trailer.

Plus I think it would be a lot easier to maintain a parked Airstream than a rolling one. You can be plugged in to electric and water, have a sewer hookup, and you don't have to worry about axles and tires.

We took our trailer to the Shady Dell over the Thanksgiving holiday. In addition to vintage trailers that they rent out, they also have spaces with full hookups, incl cable tv. It does indeed have a new owner and his name is Justin. He is a younger guy in his late 20s. He is definitely into the vintage lifestyle, in fact, he just purchased another Spartan to replace the current new mobile home that he lives in today. He plans to move that out and replace the mobile home with a vintage unit. The place was booked full over that weekend and he says that business has been very steady since he purchased the place. He owns an ajacent parcel that he is going to expand his camping sites. It is an easy weekend getaway from Phoenix and Tucson and the town of Bisbee is very cool with lots of things to see and do. It is a great place to go with friends who do not have a trailer.

We definitely recommend the Shady Dell.
