The free version has some limitations like I think blocking secure web sites (banking like you mention, just about everything with https) but the paid version works for everything. I think they have a demo version that works for everything for 30 days.

I figure paying $30 one time for tethering beats paying monthly for an air card, and they have support.

Other options are to root the phone and use free apps to do it, but that's a whole nother ball game.
