Look who dropped in for the holidays...
I had to go to my shop this morning for a tool, and when I pulled out onto the street, I noticed some unusual activity a couple of blocks down from me. There were flashing lights, and people running in that direction. I happaned to have the Battery Muncher 2000 (aka the digital camera) with me, and snapped a series of photos. In the first, here, you can see there are trees everywhere, as well as power lines all over the place. Those will become more important in later photos:

Getting closer, I can see people standing, looking at something...

Even closer, and I can see truckloads of media-type people standing around, and even more power lines overhead:

I get almost on top of the scene, and see something white sticking up over the cars and people . A little closer, and see a small Cessna has made an emergency landing in the street. The plane looks relatively undamaged, amazing when you look at the multiple power lines just above the tail, and trees in every direction. The pilot was very, very good, or very, very lucky, especially considering it is a pretty foggy morning here.
I know I asked Santa for some aircraft-grade aluminum for some skin repairs on Goliath, I guess I had better be careful what I wish for.

Wow...that brings me back...when I was a kid we had a helicopter crash right up the road from us..I remember it was nothing but a pile of foam after it was all said and done. The pilot was trying to land it in an apple orchard and something went very wrong ... he managed to jump out before it went down....nobody got hurt...the same fella that crashed it landed in our back yard before that..he wanted to take me for a ride..(my dad went to school with him).....and all I can remember is hiding under my parents bed.....good thing I stayed on the ground.

I have always said I would rather be lucky than good.
Now, if I use the aluminum from the fuselage with the reg. number on the side of our trailer, and am involved in an accident, would the FAA have to investigate?

Actually that would be a federal crime to damage an aircraft. The FBI would be after you!

Cool... my first aircraft was a 150K model N5812G. I soloed in it and bought it from my instructor and his partner. I have a lot of great memories connected to that little plane.
It was kinda like flying a '57 Chevy.... you could pop the window and hang an elbow on the sill.
The photo proves that you can land one just about anywhere.... getting out of there is the real test.

Or whoever hit me, if I bought it... Still sitting there, trying to figure out if it can be flown out.
I think they should remove the wings, and truck it out, it would be much safer all around. I've always been able to take off, it's the landing that I have trouble with.

That's a heckuva place to park an airplane! Glad everyone seemed to be out safely.

They hauled 'em off to the hospital, I'm sure it scared the crap out of the pilot. They say a good landing is one you can walk away from, and a great landing is one in which you can re-use the aircraft. Looks like it was a great landing! And no, I'm not going to offer to fly the thing out. I may be crazy, but I'm not that crazy.

Here is a link to the story. It will probably only be good for a few days:

Hey Glen, came across your post about N5812G. I owned that A/C with my partner Tom when it was based at ILG. We sold it to Dean D. (ILG tower controller) back in 1977 and haven't seen or heard of it since the early 80's. Checked my logbook to see if I had soloed you. Just curious if you flew it out of Wilmington or elsewhere.
