I did that back in my construction days. That rust ring removal is no fun, when they clamp your head and stick that hooked blade in your eye. Been there, done that.
I still have a blind spot I can see when I'm in bright light.

The same as you, I had safety glasses on. I did not find any glasses or face shield that will overcome gravity or wind directed shavings. I found not being directly under when drilling overhead works. And, positioning myself so the wind carries particles away instead of toward. For me, just being aware worked and I still always keep the glasses on.

This one is probably going to give you the best protection. Although if you want even more protection and more comfort I would consider off road motorcycle goggles. They are not cheap but since you do this stuff everyday you might be able to justify the extra cost. The motorcycle goggles have foam rubber gaskets around your cheeks and also covering the vent holes. Nothing smaller than a grain of sand will get by them. I don't know if you could wear them with a dust mask or not. Take a mask with you to a motorcycle shop and try some. Here are some from cycle gear.

Frank.

You can "double down", or up as the case may be.

Wear the above, plus a complete face shield. In that way, you double the protection for your eyes, as well as protect your face, along with that nice smile..

Wow, so many suggestions, thank you. My concern is that even with one set of glasses on, my vision is compromised. I often have to stop what I am doing and take off my glasses to see what I am doing. I am hoping for a one item solution.

If you think a pair 1962 vintage safety glasses would do the trick, consider a pair with metal mesh side guards. I worked with an engineer years ago who wore these and said they were quite comfortable and didn't fog up. It looks like they pop up on eBay frequently.

Yup, those are what I have, but with bifocal lenses. Work pretty good. No one will ever mistake ya' for a movie star when yer' wearing them, but then again, no one ever mistook me for one ever!

I often will use a clear full face shield when I'm working wood and one of those would protect your eyes from this sort of thing.

I've had a couple of rust rings scraped out of my eye in the past too.

After having redwood splinters removed from my eyes on several occasions (redwood leaves an oil that tissue can't heal over, sorry, TMI) this is a great thread to see. The plastic one piece "goggles" fog up too easily and quickly become useless. The glasses with the tight mesh on the sides are my current preferred option but I'm loving the full face shield-sounds great at deflecting bits of rivets from mouths, nostrils and eyes while lying on your back.

At this point I might just hire another person to do the drilling and anything else that might get you into the optometrist anytime soon. 

The machine shops I've worked in all required safety glasses at all times and add a face shield to use a grinder. A ball cap was very useful for keeping the flying chips from coming over the top of your safety glasses.

Also I was advised years ago to never go to an emergency room with something in your eye. They just don't have the training and equipment an eye doctor does. And yes I was there this morning and he used a little mini Dremel tool to buff the rust spot.

Frank, I'd echo the full face shield when grinding or cutting over a set of nice fitting safety glasses or if you're really trying to avoid another trip in, a pair of swim goggles

Face shields don't work too well when you are on your back under a trailer drilling holes. Also anything with gaps will let stuff fall in your eyes.

Anyone ever try what the divers use to eliminate 'fogging'? Be careful, no Beechnut before.. DAMHIK.

I use RainX anti-fog solution. An old divers trick is to use a little dish washing soap on the lens & rinse off.

okay this worked for me and in the Maryland heat where I did a lot of overhead work. I bill type tennis hat with the terry cloth sweat band reduces the target area from 4 inches to 3/4 of an inch but the down side is under or on your back overhead work it becomes a funnel at which time a doo rag or bandana takes the forehead bounce out and helps a bit. face shields are only good if you use them and since they hamper conversation (asking for anything) and make staying hydrated difficult we tend to not always use them (like hearing muffs). hard hats have a 3/4 bill on them to help deflect objects. I will normally use a doo rag with the band near my eyes when on my back and have had a finger in my eye but no aluminum holes slag or broken nuts, or rust flakes. Just my 2 cents. Safer can be a bother but long waits in the emergency room and the explanation to just about every equals more of a bother.
