You pay $450 for a tire and if you don't use them, Goodyear will buy them back for $150.
Why would Goodyear want used tires back?
Actually, some teams (the field fillers) will buy used tires from more well financed teams. Some cars just want to qualify. There is a lot of money to be made just qualifying.
I've seen cars in the Xfinity and truck series, take the green and drive to the hauler. Last I looked making the field in the Xfinity series paid $50K. Some teams can't afford a fender bender until they find a sponsor. "Green, green, green, bring her in."

They are truly a lease. I'm not kidding.
Edit: actually started in 2006. Time flies!

After Sr's passing, I've never been able to have a single hero again. It hurt too badly.

Okay, you're right.
Here's the deal.
Quote:
* NASCAR teams lease the tires at a cost of $474 each.
Essentially, they buy the tires. But Goodyear wants the worn tires back. They put an RFID chip in every tire. According to Goodyear, it's not fair for the rich teams to buy lots of tires and then use them in tire testing at other tracks. They say it gives them an unfair advantage.
In my cynical view, that's true, but it also stops teams like my hero Morgan Shepard from buying used tires with a few laps on them. Now only GoodYear is selling tires.
So now Nascar scans tires at each race to make sure they're GoodYear approved.

I worked many Nascar Cup races from 2001 to 2012 and never heard of a lease. But it's true.

(The reason I rooted for Morgan Shepard is that he's the forever underdog. And a nice guy. He'd be roller-skating to the garage because he didn't have a fancy golf cart.)
