Keep it clean - dirt abatement

Recommendations please:

We are replacing the old chunk of indoor-outdoor carpet that functions as a welcome mat - it's about 6' x 10'. We camp in a lot of state parks and there is usually a loads of fine dirt near the trailer pads. When it gets wet, it sticks to everything and most especially gets tracked into the trailer. The carpet has a backing that gets really heavy when wet and nasty to handle...

Has anyone used a polypropylene rug? Are they worth the $50 bucks?

Suggestions?

You can do what 'stupid' did on the TLC program "WYWO". He glued together a bunch of Skotch-brite pads.

What a dumberer idea that was!

If one could get sheets or rolls of the scotch brite pad, would it even be worth it?

We got a cheap 6'x9' "astroturf" type carpet at Home Depot last year. I think it was about $15.

It does the job of helping keep dirt out of the trailer.

The nice thing about it is that it doesn't have a backing and the dirt and water just run through it. When we leave, I shake it out, fold it and roll it up and put it in the storage compartment and don't have to worry about moisture and dirt.

Outdoor Carpet

We use a piece of AstroTurf. If if gets dirty, we lay it over a picnic table or the tailgate of tow vehicle and rinse it out with a hose. Takes a very short time for the water to drain from the mat and does not hurt to stow in back of truck damp and clean.

We used an astro type turf mat that we bought off a roll at Home Depot. After many years it got pretty ragged. We bought this. Water runs through it and the edges are finished. We picked it up on sale at Camping World.

We have (had?) the same rug Jack...the only problem is, since we've polished our trailer, the reflection has melted it! Not to mention we are able to fry eggs in the same spots!

We use an industrial mat 4' X 6' that is like loose woven rubber with a solid backing. It's really gets the dirt off your shoes nicely and probably will last 10 years or more. It washes off easily but is heavy.

Shari,
What are you going to do with the extra space you saved from taking out the stove?

I only have one official outing with this method of keeping the floors clean, but it seems to work well in keeping the dirt at the door. Come to think of it, I go in and out of my trailer 7,000 times a week at home, and it is parked on grass and sand. It does a GREAT JOB!

The mat has a rubber backing for non slip.

Hey Janet,
My friends have tried everything and they talked me in to a poly mat.
They said that water needs to be able to seep down through the mat
and down into the ground. They are light, and easy to wash and dry,
and very stain resistant. After big rains I move the mat to let the ground dry up.........Has anyone tried them in the sand???????

Many campgrounds are starting to require that you use a rug that won't kill the grass under it - which makes sense because without grass cover you'll get mud and sand like crazy. Astro turf doesn't qualify - you need something porous.

We use some cheap old thing we got at a home improvement warehouse around here (Menards). It grabs most if not all the sand and dirt. Whenever possible, we have the awning out so it doesn't get wet too often....but when it does, it's all fun!

I think an astroturf thing like Jack posted would be great.
