The importance of hubcaps
I picked up a 73 22' dual axle Argosy yesterday and I learned something new. The po told me to make sure the hubcaps were tight as it was against the law to be missing a hubcap.
Once he told me why I understood!
Does anyone know why it is Illegal?

Richard, congrats on the new trailer!
I don't know of any law that says you have to have hubcaps... what state is this supposed to be law in? I think somebody was jerking your chain...

I've heard that if you carry a 'Lucky Aluminum Horseshoe' you can be above the law!

You would be guilty of indecent exposure...I can tell you why, but I am not sure if it would be within forum guidlines for posting

Okay, I just spoke to my neighbor buddy, who is a State Trooper. In the State of Maryland, there is no law against missing a hubcap, other than it should aesthetically be against the law.....his words. So I'm stumped.

Rang a bell, but wrong answer...
I remembered the Car Guys talking hubcaps in a puzzler some time. I found it too -- http://www.cartalk.com/content/puzzler/2005.html. Scroll down to June 27th. It still doesn't address your question but it does give some interesting trivia about why police cars also have cool moon hubcaps. I hope this doesn't make the classic Airstream owners try to do Dukes of Hazzard jumps!

There's another reason as well... the brake discs in the police package cars are significantly larger than on the civilian version. This causes a need for wheels that have a different offset than the standard version wheels as well. Standard sedan hubcaps for a model generally won't even fit the wheels on the police package version. The baby moons, or small caps just cover the lugnuts and provide weather protection.

This has never been disclosed before to the civilian population.
It is well know to law enforcement that wheel bearings emit a very high frequency squeal that interferes with the calibration mode of X-band radar. Hubcaps attenuate the sound and prevent blown out radar units.
Hubcaps also prevent hearing loss in any dogs in the vicinity.
That's why hubcaps are required equipment in all 50 states.

Police "baby moon" hubcaps flying off a police car were cited in the missing "Roswell documents" as the majority of the debris found in the Roswell N.M. "flying saucer incident" in 1947 according to the General Accounting Office. Project Blue Book was later launched as a government coverup to hide the fact that the Big Three didn't want to institute recalls for flying hubcaps.
Years later, police "baby moon" hubcaps (according to the Warren Commission in 1965) were also spotted near the Dallas Book Depository and the Grassy Knoll in Dallas prior to the shots being fired, but evidence linking them to the Kennedy assasination has never been conclusively established.
Police "baby moon" hubcaps were also reported to be involved in the investigation surrounding the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa as well... but those reports have never been confirmed either.
There are folks who say that police "baby moon" hubcaps have been nearby or involved in nearly every major crime or incident investigation in the latter half of the twentieth century in the United States, but some folks just see conspiracies everywhere.

I have heard it all now (I think)
I will categorize this issue with the "DOT super federal regulated use of bootleg tail lights"
I can see it now.......
Cops- "Sir do you know why I have pulled you over?"
Perpetrator -"Uh..... no, I dont believe I was speeding."
Cop -"No sir, I noticed that you are missing a hubcap"
Perp -"Huh, hubcap......missing?? Well it was there when I departed"
Cop- "Yeah, thats what they all say buddy. I am going to have to ask that you exit the vehicle and follow me to your trailer so I can inspect your tail lights"
Perp- "MY TAIL LIGHTS???? Am I no candid TV or something?"
Cop- "Dont get smart with me buddy!" up against the tow vehicle.
Cop calls it in, "HQ, I am going to need back up here, suspect rogue camper, maybe the same suspect that maimed miss Betty's dog last week and 86'd Lt Charlie's Radar a few months back"
Perp-"what the h......."
Cop-"wise guy, meet Mr Tazer"
Perp- yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
