Im getting a Thule rack soon! I need the help getting it up there by myself, so Im getting a rack that will assist me to roll it on to the top! I cant wait until I get it. As far as the tanks, it makes it easy to spot the trailer!

Here is a picture of our first attempt at carrying the Hobie Mirage Sports on the roof. When we are not towing, they ride on the rear, side by side right side up, where the bikes are in photo. However they hang over the back too far for towing.
We took them over 1000 mile round trip on the roof, but even with bow and stern tie downs, the rack moved an inch or so aft. I'm not sure if rough roads or freeway speeds caused it. I am sure it was not acceleration.
I am considering trying them on the roof side by side as we do on the tonneau and see if they are more stable. Everything would be more symmetrical that way.
It is a pretty high resolution picture, so I found if you click on it once to enlarge it, and the click twice more you get a very good view of how they are rigged.
Regards,
Ken
P.S. I received no compensation from Lava Mountain Lodge for the BBQ ad.

Laura, I don't know if you remember seeing our Odyssey minivan at the Bash with the kayaks on top. We use Thule 887XT Slipstreams and are pretty happy with them. They slide back towards the rear of the car so that you can put the nose of the kayak on a little roller. You push the boat up top, then slide the whole thing forward.
It's a bit fussy, and you need to get the balance right, but it's much better than lifting the kayaks up there.

Yea Tom, thats the system Im going to be getting. This past Christmas I woke up with a bad pain in my back, seems my right hip is not straight, and in line with my left hip. Haven't been able to git rid of the pain yet. So I saw the slipstream, and thought it would be the best system. I like the fact that you can take it off and move it to another car if need be, which is nice too!

I have a 2008 Jeep Commander Sport and needed to get a rack system to transport my kayak a tarpon 120, My Commander came with the top rails, but not the cross bars. So I purchased a Thule system, that consisted of the adapter plates, mounts and cross bars along with the kayak saddles. I got the square bars because that have a neat little system that inserts into the square tubbing, that can greatly assist in the solo loading of a kayak. The system was installed and we went out to the Big Bend for a Trip down the Rio Grande, While there after dropping the AS off at Rio Grande Village, I was transporting the kayak ontop of the jeep in the racks down River Road, a rough high cleareance road, nothing that the jeep could not handle, but the thule rack system was distroyed, coming apart causing the kayak to come off and damage the Jeep roof, and tailgate. The Thule mounts have plastic inside, the plastic could not take the rough roads, The system is good for paved roads but if going off road I would suggest that you not get the Thule racks, I am going with Jeep bars in the future, they cost a little more. The repair was over 2600 dollars, the roof was dented and scratched, the rear hatchback and bumper was also damaged. The kayak was well within the weight limits of the rack at 1g, but going airborne flying down a rough road as a jeep is capable of , the thule racks could just not take the beating.

Bob, you sure got those boats loaded close to your Airstream! At first glance, I thought maybe they were just short.
If you like the Olympic area, we may see you up there some day. Have you paddled the Hoh river? Anyone else?

We just got a Hobie Tandem Adventure Island and are car topping it.
Here's the catalog view of it all put together.
So far it's a blast and we are loving it. Haven't used the kayak yet without the amas/outriggers and sail because we're still having too much fun sailing it.
We have a yakima rack system, and three cross bars. The back one is a straight bar with a pad, and the front two bars have the cradles made by Hobie for putting on a trailer...we just adapted them to fit onto the yakima bars. Works great!

Susan and I started out with a tandem, but had to trade it in on two sports, because we seemed to always want to go different directions.

I have 2 Advanced Elements/Advanced Frame inflatables with the backbone for sale. Tandem is $350 and single is $250, or both for $500. They fit in rubbermaid containers and go INSIDE the Airstream or bed of pickup or trunk of car. Google their website and check them out.

Rog,
Just back this afternoon, Hoh was beautiful, wayyyy too many places to paddle, weather was not with us but the area was fantastic. Our first venture to this area, we'll go back!
Rudder to AS is looks like 6" but is about a foot, I've tried it in the worst of dips and curves, plenty of room...
We'll post some pics, and even got some fishing in!

I'd love to discuss Hoh river. I try to get to Kalaloch at least once a year, but never had a kayak before, so I never looked into the paddling there. I took this photo of Kalaloch a few years ago.
Bandon beach is approximately where I saw my first Pygmy kayak and "just had to have one."
How's your Safari coming along? I got mine home just a day before I set out for Burning Man. It was great, as usual. Unfotunately there weren't any kayak-themed mutant vehicles, so no photos here.

No one ever said we travel light. Three large dogs, 2 very long kayaks (Hobbie peddles on this trip), all the stuff that goes w/it. Food for an army of friends, beer for that army and more new friends.
This is us leaving our site in May at Trap Pond State Park in DE. It's a quiet place w/great access to the water and a good day's worth of fun on the water. Turtles everywhere, birds and an East Coast Cypress Forrest, which is remarkable.
There's also great trails for hiking and biking along w/a Frisbee Golf Course. Too much to do on a weekend.
