Nick;

I've been watching your FB page. Man you guys are getting after it!! Build away, it must be good temps for epoxy work huh?
I'm up to 91 days on the water over 600 miles . Done with the short races, 6-8 milers and now shift focus to a half marathon and a 50 K. and maybe a full marathon. we'll see.

throw a little graphite in the epoxy for a little abrasion resistance, Also , you must know of Bjorn Thomasson, swedish designer. Great web site, mostly strippers but the info is first cabin

Ok -so, since I received no advice from anyone regarding being a beginner and wanting something cheap to start with-I was forced to buy a 30 dollars blow up boat and give it a shot at Manzanita Lake-took about 2 minutes to realize that the thing didn't move much- so, then Mark and I decided to rent a two person kayak-went well, but every time the thing turned the wrong way-it was somehow the "wife's" fault!! Really ?? The third try was two one person sit on top kayaks and that was sheer bliss!! Saved a thirty year marriage-it did.

So, now we have moved from the total idiot stage to the beginner idiot stage. Now, we think we want to buy two sit on top, one person kayaks. Dee told me that you-Tim knew all there was to know about kayaks. What should we be looking for ?? Do we really need to spend a grand on each one ??

A little advice please ??

I may not be an ultra kayak guru, but I picked up three sit on top (SOT) kayaks this spring after renting and borrowing last year several times. They clearly would not work well on white water trips or rough ocean surf, but for the casual kayakers you can get a couple 9-10 foot SOTs for about $350 each from Lifetime Products, who own the Emotion company as well.

I've used mine on slow moving rivers, lakes, wetlands, and the lawn in my back yard . I really like the stability of the SOTs so that if I want too take a break in deep water, I can very easily climb back on.

We are using proper kayak life vests which don't push up on the arm pits, oar leashes, and watercraft gloves, which all help making it more enjoyable.

I'm planning on putting a roof rack on my shell on my TV for transport, instead of beating them up in the back of the truck.

DG, yes, plenty going on in the Shrike world, thank you. 420 copies of the plans to 35 different countries in the first 4 months, with construction under way from Estonia to Florida to the U.K to Dubai to Canada. Certainly it's a good time of the year in the northern hemisphere for epoxy work. I don't like waiting days for the stuff to set, and getting that horrible amine blush.
Yes, I'm familiar with the designs of BT. I believe he's working on a producing an S&G design for the Black Pearl.
Your mileage is very impressive. I couldn't do anywhere near that without repetitive strain injuries.
Best wishes, from Nick.

Nick;

the injuries just move from one appendage to another. Currently side lined for going on 10 days now. OH "The Black Pearl" thats something else..
I currently have a set of "Sea Racer" (for me) and "Spray" (for the wife) plans on the bench.Getting ready to order 50 board feet of WRC this week!

Denise. thanks for your kind words. I'm always learning about kayaks. It helps to have a good friend that owns "Headwaters Kayak" in Lodi. I get to paddle all the stuff he has, kinda nice.
If you are just looking for a rec SOT , they are all about the same, short, wide, stable, heavy, slow , AND are on a budget go to Craigs list, there are a bunch in your area. Seems a folks purchase kayaks then loose interest or decide to move up into another boat.
I always recommend checking out your local kayak shop, maybe even REI. rent a few different boats to get a feel for what you might like. Have fun. A good paddle becomes a must as you progress.

Smile Kayak-beginners

Thank you all so much for the advice. I really appreciate it. So, two SOT 9-10 foot kayaks should do the trick for beginners. I will start looking and doing some research. Shoreline is near us maybe we will go rent some there to get another perspective.

Tim-it's a good thing you finally helped me out, had you not, you would have been telling a totally different proctologist story after Jackson-(just saying!)

Thanks Denise

Markdenise,

I would suggest you go to a kayak shop. Look for some local groups or clubs and ask them where they go. Last year my wife and I went to a local shop that was having an open house and demo day.

The owner had picked out two different hulls to try and we told him how it felt and what we liked and didn't like. By the second try he had us zeroed in on what worked for us.

Ours are sit in, and recreational kayaks. We're still learning but are having a blast. We have individual kayaks, and got both for less than $1400, complete with paddles, PFD's and Thule roof racks.

You can find less expensive ones at big box stores, but I doubt you will get much individual help.

Good Luck

markdenise,

Here in Atlanta we have a meet-up group (actually several), one called the Atlanta Area Paddlers. You probably have something similar wherever you live, and there will be a host of resources and opinions, and people who may actually provide instruction. I would recommend you do a little local research - there may be some good resources right in your back yard!

Local racing

Chasing some well known fast paddlers. At the 1 3/4 mile mark of 6. I was not expecting the guy in front of me to stop paddling entering the small wave train!

You were all right! There are a lot of kayak places near us! We live on the peninsula south of San Francisco-and lots of folks paddle out on the bay!! Also found lots of rental places and groups. I guess we will have to do some homework this summer. Thank you all so much for the advice.

I need some help.

I am a newbie in kayaking. I bought a recreational kayak from my son and have had it out one time back in March. No problems when I took it out. I also bought a like new QCC sea kayak off ebay. It has been like a piece of furniture in the family room (which we rarely use). I had partial knee replacement surgery in April and finally felt comfortable in taking the sea kayak out for the first time today. I had not a clue how it was going to go and I really had some concerns since it is a lot different from the recreational kayak. Well I got it in the water ok, got in the kayak ok, paddled for about 30 minutes and made it back to the dock without tipping it over. Now here is the problem. It felt very tipsy and unstable. Is this because I am so inexperienced and really don't know what I am doing. What do you recommend. Do I just keep paddling to get some experience or should I get some lessons? My daughter lives in Washington, DC and so I could go up there and take some lessons.

Thanks, in advance for any advice.

Dan

Dan,
I have a Necky Chatham 17 Sea Kayak that looks similar to yours. They feel like they will tip, but they're actually really stable. I have only tipped mine once in 8 years and that was by choice. Once you relax and get some paddle time under your belt you'll feel a lot more at home in the cockpit. Good luck and happy paddling.
Mike

We just purchased two Advanced Frame inflatable kayaks. Expedition 13' for me and a 10.5' advanced frame for Debbie. I wanted to be able to travel without racks. Slightly slower than hard frame but not by much. I'm very impressed with versitility and quality. I'll try and post some pics.

A Question for Help

A friend just asked me about repairing his Poke Boat. My question is what is the material and how would you suggest repairing it. The skin is very thin, less than a 1/16 and almost looks like a burlap with resin in it.

There are several holes and several spots where the body oil cans more than I would expect to be normal for fiberglass.

The Poke Boat should be Kevlar as I recall. He may want to contact Poke Boat for repair materials and instructions.

My Westside EFT is kevlar/carbon. Tricky to repair as the kevlar demands special attention. lots of info on google about repair.
