That's Leon of Body Boat Blade on Orcas Island, WA. He taught us the speed launch and it's a blast.

That photo is gorgeous.

So speed launching..... I watched the videos.....but wasn't sure why they would speed launch versus just standing there and getting in.

Obviously I'm a non kayaker, just wondering.

My wife and I contemplated purchasing a kayak so we took kayak lessons. I ended rolling mine twice trying to practice turning. Wife didn't push the envelope as much but trying to get out at the shoreline she dumped herself. I could only imagine what would've happened if I had any camera gear.

Saw this at Glacier Natl Park later that summer. I think a canoe is a better fit for us in the future.

We had our first and only (more to come hopefully) kayaking experience on Jenny Lake in Teton. It was great experience on a smooth glassy water with snow topped mountains watching over us.

We had been told if going to tandem go for a kayak versus a canoe as canoes were referred to as divorce boats. When we got to the boat rental dock they asked our preference of boats and we said the marriage boat and the laughingly signed us out a tandem kayak.

After paddling around and kind of getting the hang of it my spouse said one of the funnier comments of our marriage. In a moment of differing opinions on which direction we were going he exclaimed " for once in your life could you just follow what I'm doing". As I doubled over laughing I reminded him he was sitting in the back and surely it was easier for him to see what I was doing (paddling) in front of him.

Many years of paddling canoes and kayaks has me laughing at your answer, even being new at it, you got it right, the person at the back is the steerer and determines the direction. Front person is just for balance and extra power.

Speed launching is fun and one more way to become a better boat handler.

doorgunner, for some reason I just saw this. Oh God no, not even close. I had a slow start last year, and did some major honey-do stuff over the summer. I didn't even keep a record. I'm guessing about 300 miles. I did get in 8 miles yesterday with these old geezers though

Not a Kayak but a Mad River Adventure 14 canoe. On Eleven Mile Canyon Reservoir July '14. Little travelers wearing full floatation vest. Canoe is very stable on the still water. Have not tried it on any fast moving liquid. About 75 lbs. Not too bad to load on the camper shell. Always travel with it just in case there's some water nearby needing some visitation.

Any Kayaking ASers heading to Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness this summer? We're going to base out of Fall Lake Campground in mid July and do a bunch of day trips.
