Does anyone have experience with open cockpit kayaks? One of our camping neighbors have carbon boats that look like canoes but are really set up as kayaks, made by Placid Boatworks. Looks interesting. They are light, run in the mid twenties pounds, have kayak seat and foot pegs.

As a newbie kayaker I don't have any experience with open cockpit kayaks, but I looked at the website for Placid Boatworks and I like what I see. This looks like a kayak that would work well for me as I really have not needed the closed covering that kayaks have and the open kayak would be lighter and easier to load/unload than either my recreational kayak or sea kayak. They appear to be very high quality and expensive, just like Airstreams are.

those things are canoe's!!!

If you really want a canoe get a Wenonah!!! go to their website and get educated. It's the real deal. And check out the youtube channel for canoe races. These folks totally get after it. Big following on the east and up in the lakes, not so much out here on the left coast.
just my 2 cents .
and vacuum infusion has been around for a while, for placid to say they invented it.. lol

Thanks, doorgunner. We actually had for years a 17 foot Wenonah; great boats. I think these Placid boats are largely intended for those who need to shlep (portage), as they are light (not that the Wenonah was heavy). Still seemed interesting as a concept.

I just bought a hobie i9s from a forum member in Florida. This kayak is compact when deflated...the size of a large suitcase. Great to throw in a car or take on a airplane. The peddal system or ''mirage drive'' allows your hands to be free to fish, eat, or take pictures while still moving forward. Last Friday I tried the kayak out and had a great experience. It's pricey but well worth it. Check it out on youtube. My 2 cents

Show us photos. The boathouse must be opposite the Sovereign parking spot. Is this going to be a climate-controlled resin-curing space?

Paddling Antarctica

My Caravel stayed home but I took my Greenland paddle for an inspiring expedition to Antarctica. We paddled 11 times in snow, through sea ice, around incredible icebergs, near glaciers with penquins, seals and whales around us.Click image for larger version
