I was paddling in a secluded part of Tampa Bay right off Fort Desoto and a huge Manatee surfaced right next to me; I could have patted it with my paddle, that close. This thing was the size of a Buick; the tail was easily 6, probably 8 feet across. I was hoping he (or she) would exhibit good boating etiquette and not try to tip me in! Beautiful, really neat, but I will admit a bit disconcerting due to its size. Sorry, no pics.

We just moved from a lake in Tampa to a place on Tampa Bay and have been blown away by the frequency of manatee and dolphin sightings behind our house. On Sunday, there were at least 30 of them in separate herds. We quickly launched the kayak and hung out in the middle of them for an hour or so.

For the record, I've come in contact with manatee dozens of times while standing in my fishing kayak and each time I've had the same thought: "Don't you do it, big fella" hoping that my subliminal commands where reaching him and he wouldn't pop up and tip me over. Either they're not mischievous at all or I have super powers. I hope it's the former although it'd be my luck that the super power I was given was the ability to talk to manatees.

Dolphin, on the other hand, I do not trust. Any time I see a dorsal fin, I'm sitting down and ensuring the phone is in the sea case.

A number of years ago some foreign olympic kayakers were in the Homasassa River practicing for future events when a manatee decided to surface, lifted boat out water and everybody was amazed at how fast that kayaker could swim from danger, he didn't know that manatees are gentle creatures

We have joined the ranks of airstreamers with kayaks! Dan from Headwaters of Lodi set us up! Now to rig the back window screen of the '69 overlander to open up so we can slide the kayaks in (too many bikes in the back of the TV). Click image for larger version

We have two Necky kayaks. A 16' for the misses and a 17' for me. I can't use them at the moment due to an ankle surgery that won't allow me to get in the boats, see ankle pic below, that's about 25 pounds of metal under all that.

Paddled in the "South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous" this weekend in Lake Erie. What a blast. We did 18 miles Saturday, but a storm wiped out my plans to paddle Sunday morning. There were about 50 very nice boats there.

The campground is on top of that rock cliff on right, and there was a lot of beer drinking going on up there, yikes. This shot is from South Bass Island looking towards Green Island. Can't wait until next year.

Nick;

I've been watching your FB page. Man you guys are getting after it!! Build away, it must be good temps for epoxy work huh?
I'm up to 91 days on the water over 600 miles . Done with the short races, 6-8 milers and now shift focus to a half marathon and a 50 K. and maybe a full marathon. we'll see.

throw a little graphite in the epoxy for a little abrasion resistance, Also , you must know of Bjorn Thomasson, swedish designer. Great web site, mostly strippers but the info is first cabin

Ok -so, since I received no advice from anyone regarding being a beginner and wanting something cheap to start with-I was forced to buy a 30 dollars blow up boat and give it a shot at Manzanita Lake-took about 2 minutes to realize that the thing didn't move much- so, then Mark and I decided to rent a two person kayak-went well, but every time the thing turned the wrong way-it was somehow the "wife's" fault!! Really ?? The third try was two one person sit on top kayaks and that was sheer bliss!! Saved a thirty year marriage-it did.

So, now we have moved from the total idiot stage to the beginner idiot stage. Now, we think we want to buy two sit on top, one person kayaks. Dee told me that you-Tim knew all there was to know about kayaks. What should we be looking for ?? Do we really need to spend a grand on each one ??

A little advice please ??

I may not be an ultra kayak guru, but I picked up three sit on top (SOT) kayaks this spring after renting and borrowing last year several times. They clearly would not work well on white water trips or rough ocean surf, but for the casual kayakers you can get a couple 9-10 foot SOTs for about $350 each from Lifetime Products, who own the Emotion company as well.

I've used mine on slow moving rivers, lakes, wetlands, and the lawn in my back yard . I really like the stability of the SOTs so that if I want too take a break in deep water, I can very easily climb back on.

We are using proper kayak life vests which don't push up on the arm pits, oar leashes, and watercraft gloves, which all help making it more enjoyable.

I'm planning on putting a roof rack on my shell on my TV for transport, instead of beating them up in the back of the truck.

DG, yes, plenty going on in the Shrike world, thank you. 420 copies of the plans to 35 different countries in the first 4 months, with construction under way from Estonia to Florida to the U.K to Dubai to Canada. Certainly it's a good time of the year in the northern hemisphere for epoxy work. I don't like waiting days for the stuff to set, and getting that horrible amine blush.
Yes, I'm familiar with the designs of BT. I believe he's working on a producing an S&G design for the Black Pearl.
Your mileage is very impressive. I couldn't do anywhere near that without repetitive strain injuries.
Best wishes, from Nick.

Nick;

the injuries just move from one appendage to another. Currently side lined for going on 10 days now. OH "The Black Pearl" thats something else..
I currently have a set of "Sea Racer" (for me) and "Spray" (for the wife) plans on the bench.Getting ready to order 50 board feet of WRC this week!

Denise. thanks for your kind words. I'm always learning about kayaks. It helps to have a good friend that owns "Headwaters Kayak" in Lodi. I get to paddle all the stuff he has, kinda nice.
If you are just looking for a rec SOT , they are all about the same, short, wide, stable, heavy,slow , AND are on a budget go to Craigs list, there are a bunch in your area. Seems a folks purchase kayaks then loose interest or decide to move up into another boat.
I always recommend checking out your local kayak shop, maybe even REI. rent a few different boats to get a feel for what you might like. Have fun. A good paddle becomes a must as you progress.
