Tomorrow I'm paddling with a friend, a fitness paddle of 9.5 miles.Him in his Huki and me in the Pax20. This will be my 71st day on the water this year! one more than all of last year. Maybe I'll make that 100 mark.
And when Zep shows up , well that'll be at least another 5 or so. where is he anyway?
Just reviewing my plans for Bjorn Thomasson's Sea Racer. My winter project...

A little coaching appreciated on two subjects...

1. Kayaks. Looking for a sea-worthy single kayak, primarily for casual touring and photo taking in relatively quiet lake, river and ocean use. I recently was looking at open cockpit kayaks but have no experience with them. Any particular selection guidance appreciated. Weight (lack of) is of interest because I need to hoist onto the roof of an F250. Any experience from photo taking kayakers would be of particular interest.

2. Roof rack (F250). If possible, what I'd like to do is add a roof rack over the top of my crew cab and yet have it be stable enough to support two kayaks. I have a rack over the bed of the truck bit want to use that for other stuff. Anyone with experience using a cab-oriented roof rack would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Be sure to look at Sterling Kayaks, especially the Illusion, Ice Kao, Reflection. I own the Grand Illusion and it fits very well, is great on flat water and handles rough conditions extremely well. Zigi

Nice boats Zigi

Hi Brad

How much money are you willing to spend lol? I put 12' (35 lbs) and 17.5' (49 lbs) sea kayaks on the roof of my crew cab. I use a Yakima rack with saddles in the front and rollers in the back. I lay a towel on my tailgate and slide the boat on the tailgate up to the rollers, and then onto the saddles. Piece of cake. I have carried the boats this way for well over 10,000 miles with no problems (knock on wood).

I know HowieE loves his Thule Hullavator. I like the way you can work on your boat, at the side of your truck, while in the Hullavator. When my Yakima needs replaced, I may consider one.

Thule*-*Watersports

Yakima Racks & Carriers › Shop › Water › Roof

I don't know how much experience you have with kayaks, but as you may or may not know, the sky is the limit when it comes to sea kayaks. Once you figure out what you want, keep your eyes open, because you can save a bundle buying slightly used kayaks. Oh, don't forget about the PFD, spray skirt, paddles, on and on and on.

BTW, I paddled the Muskingum river from Coshocton OH to Williamstown WV in 4 days last week. It was 110 miles with a river velocity of .1 mph and a couple of dam portages. Went through 9 locks on the trip which were built in the mid 1800s; they were all manually operated, very cool. Camped 3 nights, and enjoyed the heck out of a 2am thunderstorm. Dense fog in the morning was absolutely beautiful to paddle in for about 2 hours. Chased a pair of bald eagles down the river for a while until they decided to sit on a branch and watch us go by.

This trip, the 49 lb boat and light carbon paddles really earned their keep. Oh my back hurts.

Bidarka is done--love it on the water. Did I say it took six days? Maybe I should add a day for making the paddle and sewing on the coaming rope. The boat isn't perfect, but it's perfect for some things. Can't wait for DOORGUNNER's critical review.

The second photo is a camping spot about 30 miles north of Gerlach, NV, a totally unexpected lake in the desert, big enough for real kayaking...and fishing (trout, catfish).

Yep, the bidarka isn't a speed boat. Hope it's good at surfing. Next one needs to be longer and a bit narrower. Tim's Night Heron was like paddling a glider.

Brad;
I'll be paddling with Sterling this weekend at Lake Tahoe. He's bringing his new design down for a big paddle event sponsored by my friend Dan @ Headwaters Kayak in Lodi.
Why don't you fly out for a fun weekend!
Reg Lake will be with Sterling, these guys are a blast to hang out with, and they both like cupcakes and beer. lol Lake Tahoe Road Trip | Facebook

Hi Tim,
Some of both. I guess they call it semi-retired? I'm back in Paso Robles this week, twin granddaughters born last week.
Love the boat pics!
