Five days of kayaking from Lopez Island, what a great week. It couldn't be any better unless the salmon were jumping in the yak by themselves.

BARTS and WEBSPINNER were our excellent hosts. It was hard getting on the ferry (there is a double entendre there which I will not go into) to come back to the mainland. But it was fun seeing two Airstreams taking up the middle of the main deck.

Greetings from a kayak novice! I just bought a Sea Eagle FastTrack 385 inflatable kayak last week. I'll take it out tomorrow morning on Bayou St. John here in New Orleans to learn what I'm supposed to be doing. Not much current, not much tide, and it's off-limits to powerboaters and personal watercraft. Nothing but fishermen, canoers, and kayakers. And the occasional jogger along the bankline. Perfect spot for a complete beginner to get my feet wet, so to speak.

Bought an inflatable because my Airstream Interstate is not only 10 feet tall, but has no place on the roof to carry one even if I could reach the roof, thanks to all the other stuff up there. If I carry a kayak inside, I want it to take up a seat, not the entire aisle front to back.

Have to say, though, except for the fact that it comes with double-ended paddles, isn't an inflatable kayak really more of an inflatable canoe?

Nice pics Zep, looks like heaven. There were a few Pygmys paddling in the 'River Trails and Ales' festival this weekend at Merietta OH. Even a couple triples there. The intersection of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers makes for some good paddling. The Ales weren't too bad either.

Oh my, I misspelled Marietta, and I was totally sober when I wrote that. After the 14 mile paddle, I crawled from my kayak to the truck. We then drove to the Marietta Brewing Company and consumed their wonderful micro brewed IPA. Ahhh, life is good. Yeah gunner, you could call it a pub crawl, but it was just to one pub lol.

I hope to get it finished in 7 days. I recommend the Skin Boat School here in Anacortes very highly.

oh , thats real nice Zep.
I tell you 3 months ago I have offsets for a Baidarka 19 sitting on my desk and what do you do.!!! You build one before me. some guy you are. Thats fine, you'll be in a big hurry to finish it off in a week and you'll probably sink it before I get to paddle it next month. I'm guessing you're staying up there for the Wooden Boat Show early sept. Maybe next year for me on that one.Should have the popup restored by then.
The flows are down to 3000cfs on the American River here in my neighborhood, about the same as your visit last year. get ready for some more fun!!
you using seal skin on the sof or some of that faux seal stuff. lol
later -don't get tied up in the twine tying that craft together.

kayak shape is becoming recognizable...eventually it will have 300+ tied joints (at 1.5 mins per joint for the simple rib joints to 5 mins for the structural joints), so sports tape for the fingers and a bottle of motrin (for the human joints) is highly recommended.

The ribs aren't really quite this white, more like a bone white (they are boiled for several hours and will revert to a more light yellow tone as they dry). They are yellow cedar, for flexibility and to contrast with the other cedar parts.

Nice , very nic indeed!
Hey, I need a few 1 X's of Sitka Spruce, and some western red cedar. Anything available where you're at now? 12 to 16 footers.
thanks
If you think your fingies are hurting now, wait till you stitch on the seal skin!!
oh, you're gonna need to deodorize that stuff before you park in my driveway, lol
