Touring Test (not the computer guy)

Yay! Managed to pack a ton of stuff into the Pygmies and see what touring could really be like. Had to cut the trip short due to the heavy smoke from forest fires, but the first couple days were spectacular. Most of the time the lakes were like glass. More on Bowron Lake at PygmyKayaker.

Here's a picture of our rig with the kayaks.

The kayaks are hard to see because they are inflatables in the back of the truck.

Here's the Argosy, the Odyssey, my Valley Avocet RM, and my wife's P&H Scorpio LV on Graves Island Provincial Park, Nova Scotia. (Lovely campsite with 180 degree ocean views.)

Im getting a Thule rack soon! I need the help getting it up there by myself, so Im getting a rack that will assist me to roll it on to the top! I cant wait until I get it. As far as the tanks, it makes it easy to spot the trailer!

Here is a picture of our first attempt at carrying the Hobie Mirage Sports on the roof. When we are not towing, they ride on the rear, side by side right side up, where the bikes are in photo. However they hang over the back too far for towing.

We took them over 1000 mile round trip on the roof, but even with bow and stern tie downs, the rack moved an inch or so aft. I'm not sure if rough roads or freeway speeds caused it. I am sure it was not acceleration.

I am considering trying them on the roof side by side as we do on the tonneau and see if they are more stable. Everything would be more symmetrical that way.

It is a pretty high resolution picture, so I found if you click on it once to enlarge it, and the click twice more you get a very good view of how they are rigged.

Regards,
Ken

P.S. I received no compensation from Lava Mountain Lodge for the BBQ ad.

Laura, I don't know if you remember seeing our Odyssey minivan at the Bash with the kayaks on top. We use Thule 887XT Slipstreams and are pretty happy with them. They slide back towards the rear of the car so that you can put the nose of the kayak on a little roller. You push the boat up top, then slide the whole thing forward.

It's a bit fussy, and you need to get the balance right, but it's much better than lifting the kayaks up there.

Yea Tom, thats the system Im going to be getting. This past Christmas I woke up with a bad pain in my back, seems my right hip is not straight, and in line with my left hip. Haven't been able to git rid of the pain yet. So I saw the slipstream, and thought it would be the best system. I like the fact that you can take it off and move it to another car if need be, which is nice too!
