Thanks. I, too, was struck by the Tern the first time I saw one on the beach in Oregon. The full story of paddling Lake Powell is here.

It's an Arctic Tern 17 from Pygmy Boats. They're up in Port Townsend, WA. All their boats are kits. There are quite few blogs covering their construction, here's mine. You'll see a list of major construction steps in the pages listed down the right side of the pages.

The Tern is simple to build, compratatively speaking, since it only has one chine. It's odd that it performs better than the more attractive multi-chine Coho.

Only if it's got a large (and cool) wine rack...in which case you can qualify as a yak support ship.

New Launching

Here's Linda Lu's new Shearwater 14 LV.
It's a Modified Shearwater 14.
I lowered the deck 2" total length of the boat to suit her petite frame.
New LOA 13'8" and beam of 21 7/16", weight 36 lbs.
Still needs deck lines, we just had to float it early!!
Nothing like a cold one after a successful test flight...

View from my kayak looking at Skye in hers, on the Corpus Christi Bay. Very nice in the summer and winter but you have to get out there early before the wind picks up...
And a view from the door of "Bud" with the kayaks in their storage positions...
I need a rack for the truck so we can take them with us when we are 'Streamin.

Wow. The geometry of doing that isn't exactly linear! Nice work.

I'm glassing the deck my my new Double Osprey today. Should have the coamings on by Wednesday. woohoo

ZEP, put a sailing rig on that double and you'll have something!!

I've almost finished up my Night Heron, fabed up a carbon fibre combing and vacuum bagged it to the hull. looks nice . I'll post some pics in about 10 days, should have it complete by then, starting my Pax 20 race boat this week, going for a 3 peat this year at the triathalon...

I love your kayak

I have a wood Chesapeake 14' and I am thinking of building a larger one. I haven't decided on Pygmy or another Chesapeake. I hope to try one out in Port Townsend next time I'm in WA. Can you put a skeg on that?

Pygmy has two good looking boats ,the Pinguino 145 and the Borealis XL. there not in the same class but the Pinguino sounds "Hot".
As far as a skeg.It would depend on conditions and ability. Both say no, esp. for a short boat. My wife added one to her CLC 17LT. "After "it was made.We have hit conditions were my 17'Gulfstream w/skeg handled the conditions better than her boat w/o a skeg. We did a lot of research and found "Superior Kayaks" Inc.
Two Rivers ,Wi. The kit is incredible.Extremely High Quality. We were able to install it
thru the rear hatch opening. The location we used wasn't what CLC or Superior suggested, however the performance is "Good" and install was not that hard.
I'm looking at a Pygmy kit. We paddled some at there store and liked them.
However the CLC that my wife made was easy and the instructions are better than Pygmy's.
But for
Skeg ,contact " Superior Kayaks,Inc" 1-920-794-2500

Are these things commercially available? I am putting in a major mod--cheek storage compartments (at 30" wide, there's lots of side room). I had planned to be able to slide a mast and rolled up sail in one side.

Carbon coaming? Holy cow! I should have my first coaming on tomorrow. The coamings are one place where building the double obviously takes a bit more time. I don't have 40 clamps, so I have to do them one at a time.

skegs, combings, sailing rigs,etc

I have a CLC 17LT without a skeg. With a following quarter sea it weathercocks wicked bad. I get lamed out doing sweep strokes to go where I want to. The 17 LT is pretty much a yak for going straight quickly, thats why it's called a light touring not a play boat. You can put a skeg on anything, even the hood of your subaru. The debate rages on about skegs and rudders, IT'S a PERSONAL choice... A fellow has an idea for a slip on skeg, I think his web is --roll or drown. check it out.
Zep- CLC has a very nice sailing rig, you can design your own just by looking at their pics, you're a experienced builder.
Here's a few pics to look at..Night Heron cockpit

sumbitch! Love it.

I don't install the Pygmy coamings per instructions. I like to glass the entire thing onto the boat (Pygmy just attaches it using thickened epoxy), but getting the glass to roll and adhere to that very thin outside edge is a challenge. I like a colored coaming, so it doesn't have to be okoume. I'm thinking of doing a dark blue on the double.

Hope to see you this fall...

By the way, have you seen the new Murrelet designs from Pygmy? Designed for rolling, for sure, but with reduced expedition storage space.

40 clamps?
Here's the start at last years race.
Zep, I also have my own way of doing the coamings now. I build up the coaming risers then sand them to blend into the deck, then fabric the deck and coaming. makes a really nice look and smooth to the fingers when jurking around with a spray skirt. Then I put the lip on the coaming with thickened epoxy. put the router on it with a 3/8" bit, sand and blend then a piece of 6 oz. cloth. If you wait for the epoxy to kick a bit you can get it to lay down over the lip fairly easy. I've built coamings a lot of ways and really unless you are gonna abuse the boat I see no real need for clothing the lip. just coat it with a few coats of epoxy.
and if you vacuum bag your coaming you don't need no stinking clamps. lol

Thanks for the pics. The masking tape is a great idea--why didn't I think of that?

BTW, that bridge looks like something I saw up at Kratie (12° 26.162N, 106° 2.656E). We were doing a bit of civil de-engineering in the area that day...

BTW for tinting wood I use Transtint, it's a anoline dye that works quite well.

Back at ya'. Turns out I had plenty of clamps, only used 58, of 92 available, on the two coamings. Can't wait to put the top edge on tonight. When I get this battleship out of the shop and can get back to working on the Safari!

This is build day 20.
