Just got a 1949 trailer
Ha ha - horse trailer! A friend loaned it to us to try out and see if we liked it enough to buy it. It's really nice to have something to move the llamas around in. The interesting thing (and more relevant thing for this forum) is that the whole roof and front end appears to be aluminum under many many layers of paint. The construction is similar to an AS too, but it has a steel frame and steel upper frame holding the walls, with the aluminum just on the front and roof, and a thick wood floor (replaced not too long ago), and thin plywood side walls. It has old car fenders too. The title says 1949, I don't know if that's the whole trailer, or just the car fenders  Either way, it's got some room for improvement.
So I guess that's my summer project. Strip off the old layers of paint and freshen it up with a new coat, maybe look at replacing the heavy layers of plywood on the ramp with some nyloboard or something light and strong so I don't get a hernia trying to lift it. I already wired new trailer lights and got that working. Tows nice. Overall, just another odd little addition to our farm...

Basecamp! I was thinking the same thing too - and much cheaper to boot! Looks great! Any thoughts on how much it weighs?

I don't know how much it weighs, I wonder if the title might say? I guess I'll find out soon, I plan to use it to take some garbage to the dump so it'll get weighed there.
You know, I can't imagine hauling horses in it - were horses significantly smaller back in '49? Because it has a divider down the middle and my llamas fit tightly in there, I can't imagine squeezing in any horse bigger than a small pony.
Hey, I guess we could outfit it for camping. Maybe I should shine it up and sell it as an early basecamp

What kind of WD gear does it use?
Is the running gear balanced?
What tires does it have?
What axle does it have?
Are you going to mount a bicycle rack on the back?

"Old Paint" may not appreciate that (insert whinnying sound here) 
I think you might have trouble rounding up a 1949 vintage horse to go with it?
on a less tongue in cheek note:
I wonder if it would be worth considering some good, high quality plywood saturated with WEST epoxy (or something similar) for the ramp. In theory this should give a pretty strong, lightweight, and somewhat moisture resistant finish, especially if used with some lower cost, non structural boards or ?? for where the horse will step.

The ramp is so heavy right now it take two of us to lift it closed. Luckily llamas only weight about 300#, so it doesn't need to be quite as heavy duty as it is. Does anyone know where I can get nyloboard or something similar in Portland?

Maybe an aluminum ramp of some kind? Or even cut the steel one and make it half the width of the trailer, and slide it side-to-side?

Two of our three llamas are being used by kids in our 4H club (we have no kids of our own, but I enjoy being a 4H leader and helping other people's kids). This is Scoops (the brown one), and Patrone (the white one) at 4H practice on Saturday. So that's why we occasionally are concerned with hauling llamas

That is just too much. Rivet lines and all. And the llamas are something else ~ have you thought of painting the trailer in the style of an Argosy?
