It's the deer opener

We'll be leaving about 1 PM today to go up to deer hunt. The rifle season opener is tomorrow. Basecamp for 3 of us is the old but snug 75 Overlander - which never moves except to mow under it. Got the propane tanks filled yesterday. Made a big batch of some great chicken noodle goulash this week to bring along. Also made a pork roast to bring for sanwiches. Someone always brings some steaks for the barbeque.
Plus there's the bacon, eggs, bread for toast and potatos for the usual big breakfasts. One camper will be cooking bacon, another the eggs or potatos. Someone making toast. Eat outside together if the weather is nice. Otherwise make the rounds and fill your plate then go back to your own camper if the weather is poor.
There's a bottle of Hennessy stashed in my bag - in case we get in a celebratory mood. There's extra sleeping bags, portable stands, heavy clothes and rain gear to bring along plus the ubiquitous Blaze Orange of course.
We can take two deer apiece this year which is rare in our area.
The deer have been hitting the plots really hard all fall. The stands have all been checked and double checked.
It's a great time with friends and family.
Too much food, lots of cribbage, catching up, naps, lots of recountings of that big one Ruth got or the teasing for one that Mike let slip away.
Missing our dads and Uncle Bernard.
Little Mike getting to hunt alone for the first time this year.
The hunt is always the same. And yet it's different every time. Weather, deer patterns and population adds to the equation as does how many of us there'll be, playing the wind, etc.
It's a fine, fun time and usually there's some venison for our efforts.
It's the deer opener folks. And though I posted this in the off topic area it is still very much Airstream related.
Ciao!
And good luck to all the other hunters here.

A very nice write up on what appears to be a family tradition. Sounds like an awesome time. I too miss my father and uncles and the trips to our hunting cabin. The time goes by all too fast.

Be careful and enjoy and make more memories! And bring back some venison!
