The first MH we bought (1976 Argosy) Every thing over $50.00 was a planned event and all expenses were tracked.

With our 78 Argosy it has become a just do whatever you need to and try not to max out the credit card I am afraid to sit down and total up the receipts, but I am sure I will some day.

Well I still have my pot to p... in, however if the AS bankrupts me at least I will have something to live in and there are always trees to p... on But if you take in to consideration the cost of a NEW AS 31' Classic, plus the interest I think I could quit work for 6 months, do a full off frame restoration and still come out money ahead I may have paid cash for my unit, but I still have to make monthly payments for pieces and parts Just my .02 worth, now I will have to add that to the monthly total

The only way I could talk my wife into the trailer and justify the cost was to buy a used one. Now my plan is to use the cost of maintaining the used one to help justify a new one. I'm pushing my luck but it's worth a try.

It does add up. I am over $2,000 into it and I haven't done much directly to my Airstream but clean, putter around and buy a new battery. After 20 years I finally extended electrical power to my remote garage and installed a 30 amp outdoor plug for the Airstream. Then in order to park it so it would be on more level ground and not in front of the garage doors I purchased and hand placed 17 cubic yards of road base and built a boulder retaining wall to extend the driveway off to the side. And from that I may have wrenched my back and developed a case of sciatica (pain in butt) that could add to the cost if it doesn't clear up.

Snow is predicted today so I will install a garage door opener. That will be a side benefit from purchasing my Airstream. Hmm, I can justify this just like NASA.

You can get an older Airstream for five to ten thousand which is less than the cost of a new low end SOB and that is for one with all of the major stuff in working condition. This cost is something like ten percent of the cost of a new Airstream.

The routine maintenance on an older Airstream is no more expensive than the routine maintenance on a new one.

You can replace the entire running gear at Andy's for about $2,000

A fridge can be replaced for $1500 or so

nearly everything else is in the few hundred category. (why does it always seem to be in $500 chuncks?)

If you figure, say, 20% to 50% down on a new Airstream, that probably means a loan payment in excess of $500 per month. You can do a lot of repair and upgrading for $500 per month and it wouldn't take too long to run out of things to do (except for those folks around here with hyperactive imaginations ;-) )

This may be why I am seeing a lot of young families opting for the classic Airstream route when they upgrade from tents.

Besides all the money being spent on resto and repair, there is a certain feel and "vibe" in an older Airstream, that the new ones can't meet.
It's a lot more money and time than I will ever admit.

Like the ASS (Airstream Sadomasochistic Soul) that I am, I have been keeping track of my expenses. WOW, talk about nickels and dimes adding up. I haven't even gotten to any of the big expenses yet!

Fortunately, my labor of love is free. Still a long way to go, but enjoying every minute of it.

I completely agree with the statements about the value, love of labor and, pride...(as I read alot of that between the lines).

One thing for sure, it becomes a part of your life~or is that the other way around?

I also echo the sentiments," Some of the nicest people I've ever meet are 'Airstreamers"..bar none. You people are a "class act"..

btw, I also have a pot to piss in as well...My A/S is gonna be with me for many, many more years~!
